  1. I've been in the market for gun and pistol cases to transport my firearms through unfriendly states. I also wanted cases I could temporarily attach to my vehicle in case someone tried to do a smash-and-grab. After a good amount of research I settled on Pelican Vault cases. The Pelican brand is known for their quality cases, and the Vault line is a new, inexpensive line of cases that fit my needs very well. I bought a pistol case (V200) to transport two pistols, and a double rifle case to transport two rifles. These are the two cases next to each other on the ground for comparison. The V200 medium pistol case is on the top, and the V800 double rifle case on the bottom. The V800 rifle case is really nice, and it's designed to transport your gear with some nice added conveniences. There is a handle in the middle of the case to carry it, and at the ends there are two handles with a set of wheels on one end built into the case. Wheels! More photos of the wheels! There are latches on both ends and four across the front to latch the cover down. These latches also have buttons in the middle of them to unlock them. When they are closed, the snap and lock into place. This is really nice because you don't have to worry about a latch catching on something and accidentally opening. They stay shut. IMG_0990.mp4 I also wanted to lock the cases. Both cases come with holes containing stainless steel inserts for locks. I bought a four-pack of locks that use the same key from Amazon. You can get them in 4-packs or 8-pack, and possibly 12-packs using the same key. Locks on the case ends. But I also wanted to have a way to lock the case to my vehicle as I mentioned earlier. On a leap of faith I grabbed a game cam lock box cable to see if I could thread it through the grommets in the case. To my delight I could! I have a few of these cam locks, so I can use one or more to lock the case and then cable it to the back seat of my truck. Alternatively, the cable lock also threads through the Master locks I bought, so I have options depending on how I am traveling. Cable threading through the locks. But the big question after all of this is: How much stuff can you put inside the case, and is it secure and safe? The V800 case is the largest case. It has a ton of room in its 53" × 16" × 6" interior. The lid opens up a full 180° to make packing the case relatively easy, and it adds to the stability of the case; it won't fall over because it lays flat. The lid has a piece of foam in it, there are two think pieces of foam, and the bottom has another piece of foam about the same thickness as the lid. Another angle showing all of the foam inside . I know the case should fit two rifles, but just to see, I put my Genesis hunting bow in it (https://genesisbow.com/product/gen-x-hunting-bow/), and it fit! This case is not only a good case for a rifle, but if you plan on traveling or flying with a bow, this case would do the job and have extra space for accessories (quiver, arrows, etc.). The Genesis bow is not small, so it was a pretty good test of the space in the case. Genesis bow specs: Axle-to-Axle Length - 35 1/2 " Brace Height - 7 5/8″ However, I bought it to transport two rifles, so here is what it looks like with the S&W AR-10 inside. Then I put my Remington 700 XRC II in .30-06 on top of it with a piece of foam in between it and the AR-10. I have to say, closing the lid was a bit of a challenge. The foam is dense, which is good for the gear inside, so getting it to compress required a little effort. I got the case close, and it was snug. The top of the case bowed up a little, maybe 1/2" to 3/4", but you can barely tell from this photo. I grabbed the case by the handle and wheeled it around a little bit. Was very easy to move, which was nice. You don't have to carry it by the center handle, the wheels do a pretty good job. They might not be very effective on dirt or gravel, but if you're moving the case around in an airport or on asphalt, you shouldn't have a problem, and it makes moving the case a pretty good experience. When I was done with that I opened the case to see if anything moved. Nothing budged, including the mags for the AR-10. Everything was in the exact same place. You could cut the foam to fit rifles or archery gear that you're going to exclusively use the case for, however, I have a bunch of long guns, so I will probably keep the foam intact and deal with the challenge of getting the lid closed. Now for the V200 medium pistol case. The pistol case is nearly the same as the V800 double rifle case except it's smaller and only has two grommets on the front for locks (the V800 has four). It also has the same four layers of foam inside. The lid on the V200 only opens 90°, which I found odd. Not a deal-breaker, but it would have been nice for it to open a full 180° like the V800 case. I have two pistols I mainly shoot. My Kimber Stainless Target II Long Slide and my Glock G23 Gen 4. Here is the case with the Kimber and four mags. And with the G23 on top with four mags and the speed loader. You could also cut the foam in this box to accommodate gear that you will exclusively use in it, but I have more pistols and may want to carry different ones in it. So just like the V800, I will probably leave the foam intact. It did require a little effort to get the lid closed on the case, but it wasn't as tough to close as the V800. The latches work in the same way as the V800 latches, and there was no real bulge to the case with both pistols in it. The only thing worth mentioning is the gap in the lid of the V200. They say that the box is water resistant, but I have my doubts. Here is what the gap looks like. The front of the case is to the left and the rear to the right. Some other reviews online and at Amazon said not to trust this gap to be anything resistant. I'm just putting the case inside my vehicle, so it doesn't really bother me. The pistols are safe and secure in the case, and it conforms to federal guidelines for transporting firearms through different states. It should be noted that the cases are TSA-approved but you will need to get TSA-approved locks. I didn't get TSA locks because I don't plan on flying with my firearms. If I do, maybe I'll get TSA locks. But it's nice to have the option to choose which locks you want to put on your cases. I haven't take the cases out on the road yet, but I expect to do that before the end of the year. I have my annual NH hunting trip, and I commute back and forth to Northern Virginia. So both cases will definite see some use in the next couple of months. If you're looking for cases to transport your firearms, the Pelican Vault cases are worth looking at.
