Hi all. New turkey hunter here. Been hunting Assunpink WMA on the Rt. 130 side (the area round the dam). Was out every day this week and managed to see a few hens -- no toms. I may have heard one or two distant gobbles after dawn, but I haven't even gotten a pre-dawn shock gobble. On two mornings, however, I managed to call in a coyote. Came running in like I'd rung the dinner bell. Clearly, this coyote had done this before. There are also deer kill carcasses everywhere -- the kind of coyote work I used to see when I lived and hunted in West Milford in Passaic County. Today, I used the last hour of the afternoon to check the area back by the Turnpike to see if I could locate a bird. Deer kills everywhere (and a Canada goose). I'm starting to wonder about how much damage these coyotes could be doing in the area. It seems that right now, we're in a natural lull in turkey activity, so that could account for the lack of toms. It could be that I suck at calling (likely). It could be that the coyotes have taken out a great deal of the turkeys. Or, it could be some combination of all of the above. My question for you is, if you were me, would you stick it out on this ground for Week B? Find new ground? Change tactics? Take up golf? Thanks!

Today was an unbelievable hunt thanks to Thunderchicken. Your awesome Jay I really canโt say enough. You got me hooked. I have done a lot of hunting but, I never knew how awesome turkey hunting would be. We did 4 sits/setups and had birds around all day, they just would not commit until 11:45 when it all finally came together. Jay got us right in on these birds. This was one of my best hunts yet. I will let Jay tell a little bit more about the hunt. It was an awesome day Todd! The morning was tough and exciting with henned up birds. All of our set up's were good with lots of gobbling, but just couldn't get them to commit. We took off to our original spot around 11:00 and within 30 minutes we had to hammers coming across the field straight at us! Todd showed great composure as motion at the wrong time has saved many a turkeys life! lol He was 10 feet away from us spitting, drumming and gobbling! We definitely had a front row seat for this crazy springtime action!! The longbeard got behind our setup and Todd was able to spin around with the cover of the tree and give the gobbler a dirt nap! 22lbs, 9 1/4" beard and 1 1/4" hooks! What a an awesome day!! And a true trophy bird!!
