the state taggs a certain amount of bears each season, if 30% of them are shot they close the season within 24 hours

The way I read it, it's 30% of the bears tagged in 2016, not prior years. So Shootstraights may have been from past years. My question to the State is, "How many were tagged in 2016?"

Bear im chasing has tags in both ears .

figure if cant find a jumbo, the best one to take out is a problem bear

Tags don't mean it's a problem bear. My bear had two metal tags, and they were just indicating that he was captured twice in a study trap. I believe the plastic tags indicate a problem bear.

RGW is right. It is based on bears tagged in the past year. At the bottom of the chart, it tells you it's based on 197 tagged bears available for harvest.

All bears that are handled are tagged regardless of whether they're a problem bear or not. Bears with tags just means they've been handled by NJDFW...nothing else. They all receive 2 metal tags(1 for each ear) and a lip tattoo indicating tag number. Cubs may also get PIT tags depending on when they're handled. NJ no longer uses plastic cattle like tags...they ripped out too easily. The metal tags get ripped out too. That's why they tattoo the inner lip.

Mine was tagged as a newborn and again a year + later (6217 & 6218) lip was 6217. Tattoo was 6217.

So doing the math at 30%, 657 bears were tagged in 2016. In 2015, 510 bears were harvested and only 18% (92)were tagged. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this year!

Cool. when they put them in initially they use 2 tags with different but consecutive numbers. The lower number goes in a specific ear(I believe it's the right ear but don't quote me on that) and is also the number they tattoo on the inner lip. For example, let's say a bear is captured. He'll get 2 tags. Those tags are numbered 1234 and 1235. 1234 will go in the right ear and get tattooed on the inner lip. 1235 will go in the left ear.
