Our daughter coaches our lake's swim team and the other day a nice size water snake was hanging around in the swimming area.  A couple of parents freaked out and grabbed shovels from the shed while screaming "it's poisonous we have to kill it".  Our daughter ran out between the angry mob and the snake and wouldn't let them near it until it was safely away.  The parents were quite irate but our daughter stood her ground and refused to let them hurt the snake.   

 

I wish I was there to see that.     

 

P.S.  She also gave them a lesson on our local snakes, poison vs. venom, etc.  but that probably fell on deaf ears.

can rusty and littlem start a thread of NJ snakes. every species, with pictures, and which species are dangerous/harmless, part of state, where they live, what they eat, etc.... I would be interested in seeing this, especially coming from a guy who has no idea about snakes.
