rgw Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 decided to try my hand at home tanning and wooden hoops. the tan came out good and the hoop ok, next one I will use willow for the hoop, I think it will curve nicer. I used the tag as the hanging hook. Rusty and ub1243 2

rgw Posted July 25, 2016 Author Posted July 25, 2016 very nice. what wood did you use in that attmept? I couldn't find any willow at the time and I tried using different woods all of which failed until I tried the honey suckle. I def want to get willow for the next one because it is quite a bit bigger. what I did was trace my pelt on ply wood and put some screws in the pattern and bent the wood around it and let it dry in in that shape.
Kype Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 well either way, it turned out good. like you said. willow would be nice. if you cant get willow: try soaking, what ever wood you are working with, in water for a few hours. that will loosen the fibers and be much easier to work with. also will help with cracking and splitting while you are bending it.
