Best thing I ever did was getting myself a beagle!  No more chasing the pheasant stocking trucks Nov-Dec for small game….now I just find suitable cover Nov-Feb n there’s usually a few rabbits in there…& Roxy pounds em for hours!!  I have found my calling w this stuff and can do it every day for the rest of my life!!  Lol

Cool!!  Lucky guys know, for those who have owned a hound, we have lived a full life!!

Where you located?  I’m usually scaring em up in central jersey.

Shoot a few years back when I was a boy my old man used to have a pack ( about 6-12 hounds at any given time). He used to breed em too.  Once me and my brother moved out and my dads knees got bad it was too much work to keep running them.  We would hunt non stop from October-February.  Had some great dogs in those years too!

used to go up to tunkhanock PA and run the dogs in the trials up there. My old man was a member there.  We had 13” and 15” running small and large pack.  All tricolors with the exception on 2 blue ticks and 1 lemon and white in all those years.

good luck it’s a lot of fun!

I’m used to bird dogs and would definitely like another shorthair but with the change in upland bird program I’m looking at possibly getting a beagle for bunnies

Yup. I ran a golden retriever for many years for pheasants…then an English setter for many more years…numerous days per week during the pheasant season…& sometimes was able to find holdover pheasants well into February….when they were raised at Rockport pheasant farm….but I got into rabbit huntin w an my older pal and had an epiphany that the way to continue to have fun small game hunting for WILD game & without having to rely on stocking trucks…getting a beagle was the way to go!

I would head down to the Beagle Club in Warren Glen and ask around!  PM me if you don’t know where it is.  I may be breeding my GSP in a year or two.  I live in Warren County.

I’m mainly looking for another pointer Leaning towards a beagle due to the upcoming upland changes but still would like another shorthair a beagle would be nice to tho

I've had many beagles in my younger days . I have run upto a 4 pack at one time by myself,  which is a handful, especially if they start different tracks or there is a split.

Unless you have access to larger properties,  I would be constantly stressed and find it hard to enjoy the hunt worrying about crossing property lines and the roads.

Years ago there weren't as many houses squeezed onto every nook and cranny of land and less worries the hounds would end up in someones back yard. Also less cars on the roads and if they got close to the road and you couldn't get to the hounds fast enough they would probably be fine as long as they could carry the track straight across.

Running and hunting with my beagles was some of my most memorable hunting times and I miss it dearly. I actually got into bird dogs because of loss of properties that I felt were safe and comfortable to run the beagles on.

I've been lucky enough to have run dogs in NJ, PA, NY and MD.  I've been to some spo trials but mostly ARHA . ARHA is (American Rabbit Hound Association)  and although I haven't been involved in years, the organization is still alive and could be a valuable resource for anyone considering getting into Beagles

The last two I got, I went to Virginia to get. NJ prices are ridiculous. We vacation in Virginia every year, so we planned it around picking them up on the way home. Maybe an option for you. They came from a really great breeder, their blood lines are Weir Creek. Excellent hunt 14”and medium speed. Mine are 5 years old and incredible.

Weird Creek is good stuff!  My pal just inherited a few from a family member who passed away down there.
