We keep a boat about an hour north of Tampa and fish the Gulf Of America from Crystal River to Anclote.  Granted I've only fished down there from January to April but I've found the fishing to be underwhelming.  Other than sheepshead its never lived up to my expectations.

This is not our boat.....I took the picture from ours......but this is my favorite place to go with the boat on The Gulf Of America.  Anclote Key.

Stay at the Innlet in Boca Grande and fish Charlotte Harbor. You can bring your own boat and tieup right outside your room or any number of local guides will pick you up at your door. Fishing is great. I have been here several times for tarpon, snook, redfish and trout. There is nothing like catching a 180 lb Tarpon in shallow back water in mid October. I would avoid the spring Tarpon run in the Boca Grande Pass because of the crowds. Tarpon charters are very expensive. Do your homework.
