I dont know why anyone would shoot a smooth bore slug gun unless they also hunt with buckshot.

I've been using sabot slugs in a riffled barrel since the day they were legal. I've never regretted not having a load of buckshot in my gun, but way back  when I was smooth bore I had plenty of regrets that it was buckshot and not a slug in the chamber.

When i started hunting 1980 there wasn't any rifled barrels or sabot slugs on the market. Smooth bore only for my Ithaca deerslayer with cylinder bore using brenekee slugs, back then with rifle sights 75 yards was the normal average furthest range maybe 100 yards if one was good. Then in the early/mid 90s If I recall I purchased my first rifled barrel shotgun then many others since

I have both.
Both have decent scopes mounted on them

i use both.   Actually use the smooth bore now more often.   Mostly due to ammo cost and the amt of fosters I have acquired over the years.

i see no difference at 50 yds.

i have taken 1 deer using sabots at 103  yds with a range finder

I saw my pop take one at about 115 with a foster and iron sights.   It’s whatever you have and feel confident with

I was using Lightfields in the 20 but switched to the hornady’s Easier and cheaper to find

Well yeah it is easier to find, Lighfields have been discontinued for years

Well you can't compare the effectiveness of sabot slugs at longer ranges. A "rifled" slug is a short range projectile. Very devestating though. You have some people claim decent accuracy out to 100 yds but it's not the norm. I would say about 50-60 yds. Sabot slugs can give you at least 3 times that if you take the time to find the ammo that suits your gun.

If you hunt dense woods, a rifled slug setup is fine. Any chance for 60+ yd shots, your better off with a sabot slug setup.

I think it’s nice to have both. Like archer said, 60+ yards I bring out the savage 220 otherwise rifled slugs out a smooth bore with iron sights.

I thought about buying a rifled slug setup for one of my hunting spots. But I already have a sabot slug gun so I decided not to add another gun to the closet. The thing that's nice about the sabot slug gun is if it's a close shot (under 35 yds) I often do neck shots ( not on a deer I'm going to mount). No tracking needed.

I use a smoothbore and shoot rifled slugs out to 65 yards..the max at Millville without going to the 100 yard plus section and adjusting. I do carry and load up buckshot as a follow up if needed.

If i was going a dedicated fully rifled barrel firing sabots i'll get a Savage 220 or a 20ga USH

First deer I ever shot was with my Remington 1100 12ga with smooth bore slug barrel that my parents gave to me for Christmas. It was a doe in Walton NY and she went down like a truck hit her. I can’t remember if I ever took another with it cause I bought my first rifle right after that.
