My buddy and I hit the river this morning with light snow falling and local ponds froze over we had high expectations . The ducks flew good at first light and we missed more than we killed then we had some geese come off roost upriver from  us heading in our direction and by the time they passed over they were over the tree tops. I fired twice knocking two birds down and decided that  was enough so I held off with the third round. I tried a Kicks High Flyer full choke today for the first time and was impressed with the long range kills on the geese but it appears to be a little tight on decoying ducks so I will give the kicks high flyer modified choke a try

Awesome. Going to get serious about duck hunting this year. Last year I downed a goose it fell into some heavy cattails never found it after about an hour of looking. My brother killed his first duck but it sank and disappeared in just a few minutes. He did manage to get his first goose though I was surprised at how good the meat was.

FYI: Ducks don't sink after actually getting killed - they float. What probably happened was it was a wounded bird and it dove under the water - that's one of their survival instincts. Wait for it to pop back up and blast it :) Sometimes though they stay down and never come back up again, or they pop up a long ways off from where they went down.

Oh, and nice shooting bucky! A day when you get ducks AND geese is a good day!

Shows how much I know then! The latter is probably what happened. Tough critters. We will be better prepared this year
