Choose one one of the following (Smokey, Lorax, Bambi) and explain:

1.  How they influenced society's beliefs about the environment.

2.  The impact that those beliefs have had on our environment.

From what I recall, the author of the book that Bambi was based on (apparently it was a much darker book, I think), he was a rabid anti-hunter. From what it looks like, Disney did exactly what that author had wanted - spurred on anti-hunting sentiments worldwide. Bambi has had a huge effect on society against hunting, IMO. I see it in my own family.

UPDATE: Actually, based on wikipedia - that author was an avid hunter!! HA! Not sure where I got that idea from... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bambi,_a_Life_in_the_Woods

Regardless, Bambi the movie has had an effect on non-hunters in society

Smokey.  Good intentions to eliminate forest fires. I think evolved to no burning - resulted in public sentiment against even controlled/ prescribed burning / reduction in excess fuel = the situation unfolding currently in CA.

Honestly I don't know if that was smokey or the audobon or the green people.  Smokey always advocated for getting fine fuels removed.  And the issues getting prescribed burns have only been in about the last 10 years.

I'm in the stand and have retyoee this damned response 3x...anyway, the author of Bambi was a hunter in the woods outside Vienna, Austria. The book is filled with info only a hunter would know. It's actually interesting to see how Disney builds on this and alters it in ways we know we'll, and that have changed world history.

About 2 yrs ago Princeton University Press issued a new translation of the original from German. It's worth checking out

A cool book that takes up Rusty's question is a history that ranges from Disney to mind/body split by Enlightenment philosopher  Descartes and then even into earlier times. Its Matt Cartmill's A View to a Death in the Morning. It's readable and yet historically specific and fascinating.  There is a whole chapter on Disney Studios making Bambi. When I get out of the stand I'll try to post some PDFs in case anyone wants to go beyond photos and 140 characters

I haven't read the book - I just read the synopsis on wikipedia, and yeah, that's what I was thinking when I read it.. for example... how many guys here think they are tracking a deer that does this exact trick! LOL ("the !@#$% thing is walking in a circle!!")

(and, yes, Bambi does get shot by a hunter in the book - I knew it was darker than the movie :) )

Quote

When Bambi is later shot by a hunter, the Prince shows him how to walk in circles to confuse the man and his dogs until the bleeding stops, then takes him to a safe place to recover.

Or this... just proves you gotta kill those wise old does and bucks, lest they teach the youngins' their wise ways!!!

Quote

.... the Old Prince saves Bambi's life when he nearly runs towards a hunter imitating a doe's call. This teaches the young buck to be cautious about blindly rushing toward any deer's call.

Amen. I'm getting tortured this winter by an old matriarch I shoulda shot two years ago, but didn't because I didn't want tough meat. Last night I sat almost 2 hrs after dark waiting for her to go away w her herd as they searched for me in the tree, jonesing for.thr late season corn i drop at that property.  When I thought the coast was clear and climbed down i got screamed at from a thicket maybe 80 yards away. Too smart for me. Time to switch up spots.for next year or go 100 percent baitless

I think you'd enjoy the new translation of Bambi

I quit college after 3 months because of this stuff.

Love campfires, deer meat, and don't know what Lorax is.  Rooted for Elmer Fudd, Wile E. Coyote, and Sylvester.  I believe who you will be is embedded in you at birth. What influences you is already in you.  Peer pressure can disrupt that for a period until you come back to your senses.
