How many of you store your inline muzzleloader w the breech plug out in the off season??

I never have the past, but think it's a good idea and will this year.

Any opinions (we have many here)???!

I haven’t but curious why you think it’s a good idea?

Not sure it is. However, noticed some rust on lip of breech plug where it makes contact w barrel.

I am crazy about cleaning & oiling....Definitely over oil, which isn't good either.

I don't use grease on breech plug threads because it isn't necessary for BH209. Although, maybe I should.

I can't think of a reason it would be a bad idea, that's why I posted....maybe something I am not thinking of.

When I store the gun for the season I remove the breech plug. Because I know in 6 months I'll wonder if it's loaded.  Lol. No plug...I can see daylight and know the gun is unloaded and clean.  Both plugs are put into separate Ziploc bags. Placed in my "muzzy" cleaning kit.

Might be a good idea to remove the plug. Hadn’t thought of it.  Guessing it would be the same logic for a bolt action rifle; remove the bolt or at least store it open.    What I do is thoroughly clean the ML. Grease the breach plug threads.  Lightly coat the barrel, inside and out, with gun oil.  Right before the season I run patches to remove the oil prior to shooting.

After cleaning I always grease the breach plug and put it back. The rust you see is more likely from the effects of the shot blast on the breech plug that happens in the time between shot and cleaning.

I now remove breech plug in the off season. Just something I do. End of season I remove all powder. Wipe everything down. Breach plug goes in muzzleloader kit with powder and all other accessories.

Several years ago I had an issue with some barrel pitting, inside of the barrel. Now more than likely it was because I did not clean good enough. But since then I remove plug. Just something I do.

Every time after shooting my muzzy, it gets cleaned and breach plug gets greased before going back in.  Not only does this make threading in and out very easy, but also keeps the O-ring from dry rotting.

All my guns are stored in the safe in my house.  Temperature & humidity controlled.

Not really sure why anyone would leave the breach plug out, doesn’t make sense to me 🤔

where are you storing it Nick ? Rust is usually due to moisture of some kind…
