I find it funny that people say a starting salary of $66K.  People are graduating college right now with over $100K in debt for a $36k a year job.  But a starting salary of $66k to people is horrible.  Oh and it is $66k for a 35 hour work week.  If you look at the base salary of most patrolmen it is low, but the overtime makes NJ affordable.

I had some dealings with a CO a couple years ago.  Very nice guy.  He had to drive from High Point to Pittstown to investigate my complaint.  He described it to me that he had his regular schedule, but could respond to any call he wanted/could in his territory.

Starting pay of $66K people laugh at but they don't factor in healthcare, dental,, pension, etc then factor in OT, holiday pay, and overall they are doing better than most.

The kid next door to me was pumping gas, he's a good kid, and a good family and he finally took my advice and got hired by Warren County Corrections,  he's been attending the Bergen County Police Academy now for nearly 2 months,  and once he graduates his parents will save money by dropping him off their healthcare and gets his own from the county

Ha ha yep! Half of them don't know how to use wrenches properly. It's not their fault though, it's the millennial parents to blame.

Very few agencies in NJ pay into social security, and the dept I worked for was one of very few when you get hired and young you don't understand or you don't want to accept it cause it's less pay, but as you get older and wiser you understand that SS payment once you start to withdraw it's added income on top of the pension

Not trying to contradict you, but most do pay into ss. NJSP are the exception.

AND they get a reduced Social Secuity monthly benefit because they get a State pension.

HOWEVER, that is most likely going change if the Senate passes the Social Security Fairness Act which repeals that. Senator Chuck Schumer said he would put it to a vote. It already has passed in the House and there is strong support on both sides. There are only 9 days left in this Conress's legislative calendar to act

In New Jersey, police officers and firefighters who aren't covered by a qualifying public retirement system are required to participate in Social Security and Medicare. This requirement began on July 2, 1991.

My pop is retired from Engine One in Elizabeth 30 years never paid a dime into SS.

I'm paying into it and really hoping it's there when I'm able to collect

Not a complete a$$ hole just one of the dingle berries that hang off it.

I don't know you & can't judge....law enforcement is a young man's game. MOST 58 yo men would not fair well against a 25 yo.

You are probably right. But having  30 direct reports and raising 3 daughters my BS meter is pretty sensitive.  I will just need to learn enough Spanish to ask if they have a fishing license.

I spent most of my money on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.

I did over 25 years as a Woods Cop and loved it right up till the end, when people became entitled. Give me an old time poacher over these whiney ATV riders any day. The pays not bad , yeah you might make more in Corrections but then you do at least an 8 year sentence in prison, just on the other side of the bars. I'll take my time in the woods and on the water. Granted it's not a job for everyone but for those of us who did it and enjoyed it we'd have no other way. One last note Guys thanx for the great memories you helped me build over my time as a Conservation Officer. I tried to treat you all as friends until you proved otherwise. Nothing made me feel better than giving someone a tip on where to hunt or fish and them coming back and letting me know the information paid off.

Yup! BTW when I started my pay was $17K, and I was glad to have the job. The only that kept me going in college was the goal of being a Conservation Officer. I also had to go through the NJ State Police Academy, at age 32 and it was worth the hassle.
