Big Moh Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 What are yall's experiences with stalking deer instead of using ground blinds or tree stands?
Greg Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Tried a couple times, never seen anyhing. Have been succesful seeing what looked like a good spot and just stand there leaning against a tree for a bit of time then moving to another spot and so on. Big Moh 1
ratherbhunting Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 (edited) I have stalked (deer) a few times, most of the times nothing, but one time I stalked up on this guy. thumbnail_Deer 1.bmp Edited December 16, 2024 by ratherbhunting Big Moh 1
KEITH STONE Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Get the right camouflage and you can get close enough.🤣 JHbowhunter, Big Moh and Rusty 3
bucky Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 In the right conditions it can be done, ground has to be wet so your quite and windy days are good too for covering up your movement Rjtfd 1
Rusty Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Still hunting with the ML in fresh snow is one of my all time favorite ways to hunt. Go slow and use your eyes more than your feet. P.S. There's a difference between stalking and still hunting. jerseyboy32, Psehunter, Booner and 1 other 2 2
jerseyboy32 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Got my muzzy buck. Seen him at 80 yards closed it to 35. Rusty 1
Greybeard Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 (edited) I've stalked up to and shot a few, that's after I seen where they were. Stillhunting is a different animal and I've shot a dozen or more doing so, bow and gun. Think more with the bow, just because of what is offered at that time of year. On second thought, now that I thought about it more, I've shot a lot with the gun while stillhunting, too. That's what I mostly do especially when there is snow, or track. Over a dozen with the bow when stillhunting. Edited December 16, 2024 by Greybeard
megavites Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 i still hunted a bedding area and walked up on two does. Shot one at 15yds. This was on a windy day with gusts to 25mph.
Gman Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Still hunting I've killed a bunch. I've only spotted and stalked once, huge buck bedded with 3 other deer, there was always 1 of the 4 deer on their feet as a lookout. I was able to get within 150 yards and took a shot with muzzy, I missed. Probably because it was about 15 degrees and I was belly crawling through 16 inches of snow, by the time I was in range I was so cold I was shaking, I had a good rest but I thought the distance was closer to 200 yards, it was also down a steep slope, down the side of a ridge. I can still replay the shot in my head from 10 years ago. I held high, probably shot right over his back. One of the largest bucks I've ever seen in NJ, double drop tine. I tracked him after the shot through fresh snow so I'm sure it was a clean miss. I never saw that buck again and I hunted that spot every opportunity for 2 years after. Haunts me!
Psehunter Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Stalking works good if you have an idea where the deer will be. Love doing that during gun season or using still hunting to scout new spots.
