joeyguts Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Anybody have any luck deer hunting when it is windy? I’ve tried both sitting in my stand and from the ground and I’ve never seen a deer.
BHC Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Winds like today I shot a buck on opening morning of 6 day it was cold with snow squall. It was so windy my friend who was about 300 yards from me never heard my shot joeyguts and bushden 1 1
Greybeard Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 Got one during the rut when they were chasing in 35+mph winds. Sometimes I think it's too still and quiet for them to feel comfortable making noise when walking, other times I feel it's too noisy with the wind. Mainly because I'm not seeing deer at either time. joeyguts 1
joeyguts Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 I’ve shot deer in rain and when it was snowing heavy, but I don’t even see them when it is windy.
SPEARFISH Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I hate hunting in the wind, but they're still out there somewhere. joeyguts 1
Nomad Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) Yes, if you have the option in your hunting area, hunt on south and east slopes when the wind is howling from the west, northwest. Edited December 5, 2024 by Nomad joeyguts and trapoholic 1 1
trapoholic Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 With a firearm, its actually a good day to walk slowly through heavy cover where the deer are bedding. They have lost all of their senses, and when spooked by your scent they do not know where you are. I have had them run in my direction. I have taken two bucks in this manner. joeyguts, Nomad, Gman and 2 others 2 2 1
ratherbhunting Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 I wouldn't be sitting in a tree in this wind. Michael Britt, Black Bear Bowhunter and joeyguts 3

Michael Britt Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) A guy in our camp quit before the end of legal in PA on Tuesday because of the wind. I was on the other side of the street, the wind was sweeping up the opposite valley and updrafting over me, then blowing towards him apparently. My best rut action has been on 15-25 mph days. Alhough, I no longer feel safe in the woods on such days, rather be on a field edge. Edited December 5, 2024 by Michael Britt Gman and joeyguts 2
electric10162 Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 If you can find places out of the wind....swamps, leeward slopes, gullys......deer gotta eat and drink. joeyguts 1
bucky Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 (edited) I wouldnt waste my time, if the wind too hard it jams up there senses and most deer will sit tight until it gets dark Edited December 5, 2024 by bucky joeyguts 1
Turkeyslayer Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 If you know of a valley or edge that’s out of the wind could be a great hunt but in most cases your average spot isn’t the best unless your hunting it just as the wind starts you might catch them moving bedding areas joeyguts 1
Lungsonlvs Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I’ve had some luck in wind. Some of my better ones. But I don’t enjoy it. joeyguts 1

I had trees fall left and right especially with ice/snow built up it can be really dangerous and all you hear is them hitting the ground. Better safe then sorry! joeyguts and JFC1 2
