I bought a Brittany pup from quail hollow last Memorial Day. I was never a bird hunter but I wanted a well bred and energetic dog. I now have the interest and finances to pay the trainer the 80/hr fee. Is it too late? Myself and the dog need training . The attached photo was the first time he ever saw a pheasant wing. We have done what we could/know how.. But im at a loss with actual field training lolImage1463605172.448276.jpg

I'm definitely interested.. It's just confusing cause I need as much training as he does.. Probably more lol. We are starting next week with the breeder.. Obvi it's just to get familiar with it. I can't afford a bunch of hours

have you thought of joining the local Del Val NAVHDA chapter? It will certainly help you learn how to train too

I started checking out the website. I'm going to do my best to make it to the next training event at collier

Read the book called 'Finished Dog' by Charles Jurney. It's more about training retrievers, but his methods are not heavy-handed and his force fetch method is by far one of the best.

I'll be there next sat. I won't be able to make this Sunday.

Plenty of people willing to help. Great group. You have to be willing to put the time in.

I used Wolters Gun Dog.

You need birds.

Go to the del Val website and look at the beginning equipment.

Check cord, bumpers, etc..

Don't get e-collar yet. Let some one show you.

He is adorable! Goodluck with him...

I really found more enjoyment training my dogs myself than I did having someone else do the work for me.

All we do as owner/trainers is enhance what the dog naturally wants to do.

Best decision I ever made was raising quail and pigeons and putting my dogs on birds 4-5 days a week. They both are everything I've ever wanted in hunting dogs. They are a heck of a team.

Your pup is not old at all. He's perfect training age. The bottom line is exposure. The more the better. I love Brittanies! Great Dogs .

I've had Americans... these are my 2 French Britts... I'm partial of course but they are fantastic on grouse, woodcock and pheasant...

And soak it up! Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions...

Don't ever feel like there has to be a time line of progression. EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT.

My boy took much longer to train than my female did. It did help that she basically copied him. She's 16 months and backing great. This summer will be alot of backing for both of them.

She has one heck of a nose to, they both do actually. I had them out last October woodcock hunting when a snow squall came through in NC Pa and dumped 3" really fast. They both still managed to put up a bunch of timber doodles in the fresh snow. They were absolutely soaked but they loved it and didn't want to stop hunting.

It was much easier training my female as she had a good teacher in my male.

This past January while hunting pheasant my female locks up on a bird. I walk up, flush the bird and shoot it. Well the birds falls and gets up running with a broken wing. It runs into the center of the nastiest briar patch I ever seen. My female crawls on her belly into the patch and grabs the bird by the head and drags it out to me. I was absolutely amazed...

She held it in her mouth woth the look like "look dad, I got him"
