It's been slow here for bucks all season. Don't know if its the acorns, the lack of water, or the temperature swings. Plenty of does and small bucks though. Yesterday morning, we got pictures of a buck cruising the edge of one of the food plots while I was hunting the other side of the farm. So for the afternoon hunt, we decided to hunt the plot and one of the gullies below. Got in at 2PM and within minutes a few deer appeared on the far side of the plot. As time when on more deer came into the plot from all directions including three smaller bucks. They sparred with each other and chased does for hours, until this guy showed up. He quickly took over, as he dwarfed the other bucks, and slowly milled his way around the plot, finally offering me a 40 yard shot. Undecided about shooting so early in the season, he continued to move closer. Once I decided he was a shooter, I ranged him at 31 yards, slightly quartering away, and let it fly. The bolt hit him behind the right shoulder and exited forward of the other. A short gallop and he was done. No tracking necessary.

He's a nice 8 point weighing 204 on the hoof.

Now my rutcation will turn into a work vacation as I need to get my barn insulated before winter. Thanks for looking.
