buckfever1974
Does anyone transport a canoe or rowboat on top of their SUV? I'd love to pick something up what I can take a kid or two out in but I can't buy a trailer as I don't own my own home. The kids also aren't big enough to help power lift a boat on to the roof of my Nissan Xterra. Do any of you own such craft and get it on the roof of your SUV on your own and if so, what kind of boat do you own and how do you do it? I'd actually like to try and fish a little more and hunt a little less this fall if I can figure out a way to do it.

Kype
i would consider a canoe. i have been putting canoes on pickups since i was 17. it can be done very easily by yourself. i slide the canoe up on the tailgate/truck. and flip it upside down with just the bow on the tailgate/trunk. then slide the canoe up and adjust it so it can balance on its own. with my big truck i used one strap from the stern to the hitch, and one strap over the bed rails. with an suv i put one strap around it through the backseat, and same for the front. a rowboat may be to heavy for one person. take a look into canoes, they are great boats and can go places other watercraft cant. I agree with Kype. A canoe could be more versatile, especially a lightweight aluminum one. We have one for the PA lake house and recently picked up a trolling motor for it which is perfect for getting around. The next purchase I may make for it are small seats with backs to be more comfortable while fishing.
