Logsplitter Hydraulic Pump Repair

Recommended Posts

Fixing a log splitter that has a leak in the front shaft seal of the hydraulic pump.  Pump is a Barnes 11 gpm pump made in 1985. Tag that had actual model number on it is long gone. Company has been bought and sold twice since then and I can't find parts.

Anyone ever repair one ? If I take it apart, can I just match up the seals from a different pump that has the same shaft size ? I can buy a new one but all this one needs is a new seal. I'm tearing this apart regarless just to see how it works. Thanks in advance.

its a lip seal? yes you can match it up. measure the OD and ID of the shaft and bore. lip seals, mechanical seals, and double opposed seals all have the same tolerances depending on shaft OD. you will need a caliper though. US seal will have it. pm me and i can likely get the seal you need. i also work on barnes pumps.

This is great to hear after driving myself nuts trying to find info on it. I don't know what seal is called, first time I'm messing with one. Where my finger is pointing is where it's leaking from and is on the bottom when it's on the splitter.

There should be a part number right on the seal. Polish up that shaft and use a sheet metal screw to pull the old one out and press the new one in with a deep socket/hammer. I don’t see a circlip or retainer or anything holding the one one on but I could just not be seeing it.

you wouldn’t have to tear the pump apart if you clean everything good before pulling the seal and are careful

And make sure the shaft doesnt have a groove worn into it by the seal lip or it will continue to leak with a new seal. If you want to reseal the whole pump or replace it with new there should be a tag with make and model, if so you can order a seal kit or pump from a local hydraulic repair shop.

If youre in the Paterson area American Hose and Hydraulic should have what youre looking for
