Pros & Cons of buying a 16 ft Carolina Skiff to fish, crab, & clam Barnegat Bay

Carolinas are great for shallow stuff where you won’t encounter any real waves, then you get pounded. In a chop trim out to raise the bow a bit and you’ll stay pretty dry.  The one thing that sucks with Carolinas is drifting, no sharp bow entry lets the wind turn the boat so instead of drifting sideways which you want you end up drifting with just the stern to fish off

I hear you get wet in choppy water but it’s good for shallow bay recreation.  @JHbowhunterdidnt you have a Carolina skiff & got rid of it??

I had a 19 DLV - was a great bay boat and got me nearshore many times.   Very stable and seaworthy, tons of fishing room.  At end of the day it was a skiff, and short stiff bay chop was fine but a little steeper and spread out in deeper bay or ocean would knock your teeth out.

My 20' 2" Key West with a electric jack plate, is way more versatile.   Can get almost as skinny as the skiff could but can handle the snot way better.  I can cruise 30mph through stuff I could only go 6mph with in the skiff.

The Carolina Skiff is still a very verstatile rig, and will get you out the inlets many days to fluke or bass or bluefish nearshore. Just pick your days.

I had a 16 ft Sundance skiff for 8 years. Great boat that I crabbed, fished and duck hunted with it in the Great Bay and between Holgate and Little Egg Harbor.  Fished near the inlet never went through it.  You have to watch the boat traffic with that size boat and yes it spins around having a very small v.

You do get some spray when the wind starts.  I would quit fishing at that point. It's not an all day fishing boat. But shallow draft so you can get to good crabbing spots.  I would buy another in the future. It had a camo skin on the outside so great for duck hunting. I called it the " New Gretna Express "
