Trout Fishing

Recommended Posts

I think the state did a good job this year stocking . One of my best years by far. Only fished the Musky and South Branch with my fly rod nymphs and drys . Went out today caught six in 1 1/2 hours on Musky .Whole season has been like that. Water was cold enough but starting to get where I stop. Usually 68 degrees . Shannons fly shop  had 68 degrees  on blackboard other day but I read 63 on the water. I did catch a lot of 12 to 15 inch fish which is good for stockers.  Two 18 inch  plus. All Rainbows .  No pics I put all back as fast as I can .I did meet a lot of good fellow fisherman  which is a plus .  Anyone else have a good year.

Only went once a week and limited out each time.  One 16" and another big one jumped back out of the kayak.  Snapping turtle got one off of my stringer yesterday.  Last couple of times they've been tasting like the pond water, so I'm done.

They call it a lake but actually is it's a very large pond. Learned a long time ago to not leave fish on the stringer in the water. Lost lost many to turtles snake also

Those would be wild, not native. Only brook “trout” are native to the northeast. And they are actually a char.

The state stocks the same amount give or take a few fish each year and to the same places with minor exceptions (like a private landowner no longer allowing public access or the state buying a new property on a stocked stream). One of the biggest reasons many are killing it this year is high water in the preseason and early season which pushed fish out of the bridge holes where they are mostly stocked downstream into new water. Dispersal is key to have more trout around later into the year in trout maintenance (TM) waters like the Musky or Pequest.  As I mentioned before, in high water years, fish downstream of the stocking points, not right at them.
