Va vs. NJ... It's good to be home

Well, i been officially living down here in Va for a couple months now.. Moved in with a friend I've had since kindergarten.. The other day we went fishing.. Nothing intense.. Just catch whatever was nibbling at the hook.. Who cares, just something to do on a nice sunny day..  Yup, relax, enjoy the sunshine, talk about the trees starting to bud, the bugs on the water, a cotton mouth that swam by.. Some turtles over on a log.. look a muskrat, cool..What ever..  "Hey i caught one" my buddy says.. "eh, just a small sunny" i barked.. "Not even big enough to use for minnow bait" i joked.. Suddenly, down the road i see a horrible site.. And it was headed our way.. ITS THE GAME WARDEN!!!.. Having lived in NJ for so long my body tightend up, The instinct to run and hide was almost overwhelming.. I looked at my friend and said we gotta get outta here before they catch us.. My buddy just laughed and said relax, Your in VA now.. everything will be alright.. But i wasn't buy'n it.. I just knew i was going to jail.. for what i have no clue..About that time i realized my fishing license was in the car.. Regs say you gotta have it on your person.. My GOD were screwed i thought as it was to late to make a break for the vehicle.. The warden was on us and getting out of his chariot from hell.. "Hey how ya'll do'n" says  the warden.. The tone of his voice was friendly, not in the least bit intimidating.. He politely asked how our day was going and if we were catching anything.. Not much my buddy said as i sat there trying my damndest to remain as inconspicuous as i could. After all, my license is in the car, not in my wallet like it's suppose to be.. I just know he's gonna turn into a d*ck when he finds that out.. Prolly get arrested.. Paranoia sets in.. Then the warden popped the million $$ question.. "Can i see ya'lls license"?.. Sure my buddy says as he pulled his out of his wallet.. Left with no recourse i had to admit "Yeah i got mine over in the car, I'll get it for you"... Much to my surprise the Warden just said "ok thanks"..  Wow i thought to myself.. That's it?.. "ok thanks"?.. wheres my lecture?.. wheres my ticket?.. If i was in NJ i would have gott"n one or the other.. Most likely both i thought..EVEN IF I WAS FISHING ON MY OWN PROPERTY!!.. After engaging in some small talk for a few the warden moved on to a couple home boys fishing down the river bank a ways.. We could hear them talking.. The warden approached them in the same way he approached us.. Friendly and polite.. U could tell it wasn't just an act or script he memorized from some law enforcement hand book about how to act professional or something.. he was real, nothing phony about him...  Oh but the home boys DIDN't have a license.. tisk tisk tisk i thought.. After hearing that i was waiting for the fire works to fly.. Kept one eye on the wardens hand cuffs and the other eye on his ticket book.. Neither would come into play.. The warden simply reminded the fellows they need a license if they are gonna fish.. The homeys  agreed and started packing their things.. The Warden made his way back to me and my buddy as the the other guys drove away..  We talked about fishing for a few more minutes, about when the bass are gonna start biting, when the crappie are gonna show up, things like that before he left.. As he drove off two things occurred to me.. 1) the warden did his job with out a fuss or turning someone out to catch a few fish into a criminal.. His job is to make sure rules are followed, and he did.. By the time he left i had my license on my person and the guys who didn't have their license weren't fishing.. All this without ONE ticket being issued.. No stupid lectures of any kind, and no one went to jail... and the second thing that occurred to me is... It's good to be home

Well, Maybe I exaggerated a little.. The thing was my first encounter with law enforcement here in VA was a pleasant one even though I and others weren't in FULL compliance with the law... At least initially anyway....  The conservation officers in NJ really aren't that bad. Not bad at all actually..Cant say the same for the Park Police..

Found out a week or so ago you cant access the WMA's here in this state without either a  Hunting License, fishing license or access permit.. I kinda thought that was messed up but then it occurred to me at least VA, unlike NJ, isn't putting the burden of managing those properties squarely on the wallets  of sportsmen while everyone else and their dogs use them freely FREE of charge..

Deer aren't as thick here where I'm at in South eastern VA as they are in say Zone's 8 & 9 up in NJ.. But that's not a bad thing..  I know how to hunt.. Gotta get out and start scouting soon..  Using dogs to hunt deer  here is common and legal .. As far as I'm concerned though, People who use dogs to hunt deer are the equivalent of those who use bait in NJ.  Not knocking it, Just say'n

I have to agree with him , I lived in PA and North Carolina the demeanor is a bit different. Forgetting a minor detail will get you a reminder in other states. I always remember my buddy who got a big fine and lost his doe because he was on the wrong side of the street. He was a nut made his own clothes and built his flintlock. Not exactly a guy out to stack the deer. I bet in NC they would have said drag that over to the other side of the road! He had to go to court lost his deer, license and got fined .

"must be nice to live in America"

Oh I can't put into words just how nice it really is... Its been a long time coming..  The people, law enforcement, cost of living, TAXES.. Its all good...

Read a couple news articles on NJ.com earlier today.. One was about a new law forbidding walking and texting and another that was to allow judges and politicians to obtain a CC... Screw every one else.. lol..
