cbeez23
Hey Folks- Like the title says, I am looking to hunt a property for bear this upcoming 2024 fall season. I have not had much luck yet in NJ for bear but would LOVE to get an opportunity at one this year. I'd be going during bow season so likely early October. If anyone could give me an opportunity, that would be awesome. I grew up around the hackettstown area but now live in way southern NJ. Just figured I'd put the question out there to see if someone has an area I can try for one at. Thank you! Rusty
Bucksnbows
Why private land when public lands hold just as many? I wouldn’t sweat which type of land, I would just set up a bait station in good bear country and put a cell cam on it. Make once a week runs for 2-3 weeks to bait and be done. Lots of good public land overrun with bears. Turkeyslayer and BHC
cbeez23
Not super familiar with the area or public land that has lots of bears up there. I’d do what both of you are suggesting- but some pointers would be SUPER helpful. Thank you both.

Wawayanda SP, Newark Watershed, Hamburg MT WMA, Sparta Mt WMA, Wildcat Ridge WMA, Rockaway River WMA all have lots of bears. Thank you. Gonna give a shot at scouting one of those areas in the next few months and will get cams set up. Rusty

Set up some cameras and run some bait stations a month out. Hunt the trails to the bait. As long as your in one of those areas listed above you’ll get on some bears as long as you have the time to hunt. cbeez23
mazzgolf
I'm way down south of the Mason-Dixon Line, too. I'm 2.5 hours away from up there. I don't plan on baiting. I just can't do a 5-hour round trip several times just to feed bears lol But I can tell you I went up last year during muzzy days on public land, and saw bear (I think it was my first day, in fact; IIRC I only went up the one day). I could have pulled the trigger except momma was with cubs. Had her at 30 yards. Stupid new rule, but I play by the rules. So, just go where there are known to be bears. This year I might take some scent with me ... Rack-Getter has some scent that I hear is good https://www.rackgetterscents.net/bear-getter-products .. or Signal 11 Lures https://signal11lures.com/bear-food-attractants/ ... spread some of that out when I get there. I dunno if it will do anything... worth a shot for the $15 or so it'll cost.

I’m looking for a private piece also . i don’t want to do all the work to have someone set up next to me . prefer to shoot something over 350 pounds , so access in with a quad is def beneficial for recovering it . getting it out of the woods and skinned before the meat starts to turn . . I've done it njfw proof of registration and insurance. They sent me a letter I printed. Bob I know all about that . Their are thousands of acres of public land that doesn’t apply to . and those that do are very tight issuing those permits .
