Looking for mentor

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi all!
I live in bergen county. 40 years old, but never too late to start! Looking for a mentor to help me get started in hunting. Got my hunting license and am looking for someone with experience to show me the ropes. Willing to travel if need be (up to 1.5 hours).  Please advise. Thank you all in advance.

Congratulations on getting your license.  Did you get your shotgun and bow licenses?  I started hunting at 39.  I wish I started sooner.  I would with small game and maybe a hunt on game preserve like the Hunts Family Preserve.

Believe you could have taken rifle and muzzleloader at the same time as shotgun, Wilson New Jersey can be complicated read the digest again and again and again any questions never hesitate to ask  a lot of knowledgeable members here!

Good Luck, it can be addicting and expensive.lol:up:

Welcome to the site Bergen!  You are on the right path, keep at it.

I am 100% self taught myself, so my advice would be:

1.  We learn from our mistakes, so get out there and make lots of them.  Every trip into the woods is a learning experience.

2.  The best way to find a "mentor" is to rub shoulders with experienced hunters.  Posting here is a great start, and joining hunting organizations and going to get-togethers will put you in contact with like minded locals.

Most of the guys that I hunt with today are guys that I met through this site.  Best of luck and enjoy the process.

I’m open to any game. Turkey season is basically over. It’s more about getting out in the field and gaining the knowledge and experience. Deer hunting is always something I wanted to get into. I’m willing to learn and see what I like most.

NY Turkey Season goes until May 31. Things are just starting to heat up. You get two tags and can hunt on Sundays
