Doubled up!

Kind of “new” to the turkey game. Did it a lot when I was younger and shot a few but just didn’t have time with work and life. Turkeys never really blew my skirt up like deer hunting. My son is 13 now and he’s got the bug for all things outdoors. So when a buddy took us for youth day last year for his first turkey he couldn’t wait to do it again. This year we both got our tags and it’s up to me to get him on the birds. Not gonna lie, I’m pretty rusty lol. Been having a tough go the last few weekends. Not finding the turkeys. Got setup on a bird gobbling his head off on the roost two weekends ago but when he flew down he just wouldn’t commit. 

So Saturday we got to our regular spot and it’s just silence. Owls all over doing the job for me but not one peep from a roost. So we pulled out and went up to a spot I’ve seen a lot of turkeys during deer season. Got out of the truck around 6:30 and heard a distant gobble. At least there’s something here! 
 

Got all the way out to a distant field edge. Woods are public/field is private. Glassed a few turkeys about 200 yds away in the field. Did a couple calls and here they come. Got set up about 40yds from the edge in the woods and set the hen decoy. Did just enough clucking to keep them interested and they came on a string all the way across the field right into the woods at 30yds. 3 Jakes and a hen. Told my son to shoot the first red head you have a shot at. Boom! One flops. The others just jumped and didn’t leave so he hands me the gun and Boom! 2 birds down. 7:30 Tagged out! I wouldn’t usually be so jazzed up for a couple Jake’s but after the limited amount of time and opportunities we’ve had, a legal turkey was enough for us. It’s all about the experience and doing it with my son. It’s fun relearning and now I kind of got the bug too. Couldn't have been a better morning!

Agreed! He is growing into quite the outdoorsman. I remember those special moments with my dad. Nothing better to now make those memories with my son. He thinks we are just hunting. But it’s so much more than that
