Walleye flyfishing rigup recommendations

Recommended Posts

Guys;

I know that Walleye arent a species most conducive to being effectively taken on a fly but it can be done and have been reading / watching yutube videos about it. Thing that im a little unsure about currently is what kind of line to use in my rig: should I use intermediate or full sinking? Seems that both are used , so , not sure; what do you think?

I would go into Canada years ago in June just as the waters would be warming up , the Walleye & Pike would be in the shallows - 6'and less so when we fly fished ,intermediate lines with weighted streamers worked great ! I cant find any of the walleye photos !

Years ago on the lackawaxen river in pa there was a spot I would walleye fish with leeches and get my limit pretty much on command. They also stocked trout there so one day in early June we went fly fishing for trout at the same spot. As we walked to the spot I said to my buddy imagine if we end up getting walleye on the flys. Sure enough first cast with a pheasant tail flash nymph I hooked up with a walleye. I’ve the next 3 days we caught over 60 walleye on nymphs. And it never happened again

Tough fish to target on the fly. They are normally at some depth so I would fish a sinking line to get the presentation near the bottom.  You will definitely need the right conditions to do this.  My favorite is the cortland specialty sink.

Yeah, Ive heard that you can get Walleye on the Lackawaxen; more at the confluence with the big D, right?

What sink rate you like in that line? Like a 3-4 ips?
