I was lucky enough to see one of my favorite birds today

We had an Indigo Bunting come by with his friend a Cardinal. Two bright colored birds.

It’s my favorite bird. I only see them in NY when I’m Turkey hunting. Pretty rare. They also have some strange habits. I had one follow me down a logging road one foggy morning. One of my best “birding” memories.

Brilliant colors

They are actually very common if you know their song and habitat preferences. Despite their brilliant colors, they spend most of their time high up in trees in mature forest, near openings in the canopy. Once you learn their song and hear one, spotting it becomes far easier. They were all over my buddy’s NY farm this past weekend and I only saw a few while turkey hunting, but heard many more each day.
