When a deer dies

Do you just go out and pick up a sun bleached skull after all that?  I am surprised that a hawk dropped in to scavenge but not flock of vultures.  We get a dozen in the backyard when there is a gut pile for them to pick at.

Hawks and eagles are definitely scavengers as much as they are hunters. Animals are smart, why expend the energy required to hunt when you could get an easy meal that's already been killed for you. I once watched an osprey hunting along a river, it swooped down and grabbed a rather large trout and carried it to the shore. A bald eagle then swooped out of no where and stole the fish. Instead of hunting himself he waited for the osprey to do the hard work then swooped in for an easy meal. Raptors really are an intelligent group of animals
