Bear Spray verses bullets

Now that we are sharing the woods with a large predator and can not even legally protect ourselves with a sidearm I wonder if the Nazis in charge here in NJ might let us use this bear spray stuff. It seems to be quite effective on Grizzlies so I'm sure a Black Bear would have no chance against it if it were made legal to carry here.

NJ legislators prefer a completely disarmed state, so I doubt it will happen.

We are allowed in NJ to carry bear spray, but it is considered not enough in most situations to ward off an attack.  If memory serves - and I could have it incorrect - we can only carry 10 oz. canisters in this state.  But the position paper (white paper) by US Fish & Wildlife is helpful, even if it is aimed specifically at grizzly bears.

i was browsing down some isles at my local sport shop and saw bear spray on the shelf. i could not tell you what ounce can it was, but was pretty big. i was surprised to see that in a NJ shop. 

 

youtube bear spray vs. firepower. plenty of videos. i may pick up a big canister just for home defense. the amount of foam (not spray) these bear sprays throw out is amazing. and i for one would never want to be sprayed with it. plus its 30 foot+ stream is nice. 

 

my only concern would be, in an enclosed area such as a house or room, the sprayer may be effected by the spray. these things are made for use outside.

Sure, why not.  At that point it would be self defense, and you most likely wouldn't survive, so there wouldn't be any charges brought against you or your estate.

blade on bear seems like a bad way to go but its better then hand to hand.

Buying it and legally carrying it are two different things in NJ.

If you're going to break the law, go with the oversize bear spray can over the illegal handgun. One will get you a fine and the other a roommate named Bubba.

I plan on heading up to Alaska to do some serious hiking and salmon fishing over the summer, and bear spray is right up there on my list of things to pick up when we get there, and I doubt we'll use it, so I imagine it will make the trip back to Jersey, it never even occurred to me that it could be illegal here, thanks for the heads up.

You can carry a side arm in alaska.i would be packing a 10mm or 454 up there

I just watched the movie about the bear that ripped the Dr from her tent and feasted on her in Canada.hollywood flipped the script and had the man get devoured but it was actually a woman.imo I would feel more secure packing heat that I know will knock them on their arse.the bear spray has some flaws my buddy sprayed it at his cabin by Yellowstone it affects ted him his mother fiance and brother they were gagging so bad they pissed themselves.he was being a wise ass and spraying it outside with the cabin windows open he said it's pretty potent
