Some of you know me, some of you do not. If you do, you are already acutely aware that for more than a decade I have been a staunch supporter of the bear hunt in NJ. You know I have gone toe-to-toe with the anti's in the various print media outlets both in the comments section as well as sending in letters and face-to-face at not only their meetings but at their protests as well.

If anyone is interested in being a part of a group whose purpose will be to get the actual information out there in various ways contact me here or on fb, either through the BEAR Group Lies or the BearNJ group . We are starting to look at putting this together and already have a core group of people interested in doing this and researching our options.

I will be posting this in a few different areas here for maximum visibility

I thought I had replied here to your thread, but here's a shout out to the great service you and others do for not only bear hunting, but the science behind modern game management.  For the record, I am on both of Trudheim's Facebook pages and have really stepped up my responses to the antis.  Mostly these replies are via newspaper articles (often letters to the editors from the whackiest of the bunch) and our replies are often on Facebook linked pages set up by the various newspapers still in business.  The best thing we can do is not stoop to name calling but rather stick to the facts and point out the emotional arguments made by the antis as lacking any facts to back them up.

I believe they are attempting to ramp up their attacks because they are freaked out by several recent events including a high harvest, increased number of category 1 complaints, growing public sentiment supporting expanded hunting, the October archery hunt, the fall '15 expanded hunt, the death of Darsh Patel, the attack of the Scout leader at a cave (den) entrance last month, etc.

I'm still looking for reliable scientific information on the death moan . . . is it pre or post mortem?

I have no scientific data to back me up, but I believe it is about the last thing some bears do before taking their last breath.  My bear did not make that moan, but the one Troutandbucks shot did, although not very loudly.

Could the death moan just be a combination of relaxed muscles and the venting of the lungs, very similar to snoring when the jaw muscles relax and change the airway path in the throat?

Sapere aude.

Audeamus.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

I read on another site where the OP claimed that he witnessed both of his bears death moans and claims that the bears were 100% already dead.

This is what was sent to me when I was researching it:

"This is a sound you are not likely to ever hear. This is called the Bear death moan, caused by the sudden collapse of the lungs after death. This moan is very loud and can last intermittently for up to a minute after the bear dies. Hunter's, especially archers, use this sound as a signal that it is safe to approach their quarry. It is said that this death moan occurs in only 40% of the kills."

However, it came from a sasquachsearch page and I can't seem to find any other scientific data to back it up.

I have always heard that it was because of the collapse of the lungs after death but have no data to back that up. My first bead moaned and my last didn't. I wasn't able to see my first bear expire since it ran out of site.

I to believe the antis are going to up the game with the extra seasons coming next season, hence we need to keep all our efforts in step.

Please continue to update all of us on all issues, and anyway i can help with our cause, please feel free to ask for help.

Thanks,

Tony
