New York license question - HIP stamp?

Recommended Posts

I have a simple NY license question for those that hunt waterfowl up there.

I got my license/tags today in the mail - I got everything except the HIP stamp. Now, in NJ, we actually get a physical HIP tag (either on the green paper or we print it out at home). So I assumed NY would, too. But I did not get one with the rest of the licenses/tags they sent me.

I went online and looked at my active licenses and HIP is listed. Everything except the HIP has an October date under "Last Printed On". For HIP, the "Last Printed On" is blank.

Am I supposed to print this out myself? I don't see where I do that on the website. And, like I say, I didn't get one in the mail.

I tried calling them but their office closed at 4pm.

Anyone know how NY handles HIP? Is there a physical stamp we should get or is it all just electronic?

Why can’t we have a QR code or an app that shows all of our valid licenses and permits for hunting/fishing in 2023.

Yeah. The whole paper thing is annoying. I can go online - the NY website shows all my active licenses/tags and HIP shows up there (it says I am "registered"). But I didn't get a paper copy and I can't figure out how to print it (I don't think you can - I see nothing here about printing licenses). So I am wondering if NY even has a paper version of HIP.

We have had an app here in Kansas for the last couple of years. It sure makes things easy, like submitting my harvest report. It lists all my families licenses, hunting and fishing, along with all valid and out of date permits. It does make life so mush easier!

Everything that you have is listed on one of the last pages before the receipt page of your licence. I believe its the Confirmation Page

U have to add hip to ur ny cart.  They mailed mine.  Came on the same orange lic tag

OK. So you did get a copy on the orange paper. That answers that question. I didn't get a hard copy. I'll call them tomorrow.

I did add it to the cart. Even though it was $0, I added it to my cart and it shows up on my receipt. I can see it as "Active" on my online account, and it says I'm "Registered" and I have a HIP number.

I hunt Woodcock in New York. NY resident  as well.

You need to call the HIP Registration #-- 1-866-933-2257.   Page 51 of the 2023/24 NY  Hunting + Trapping guide.

Automated.  You will receive  a series of Questions  about what migratory birds you hunted last year and how many you took.

Have your NY Backtag #  for 2023/24 ready to get things started.

Have a pen and paper ready. At the end of the questions- you will be given your HIP#.

It is 8 numbers.  And you are all set.

Not a NY resident but I have always done the same. Actually I just would write the hip on the lower corner of my display back tag portion.

I have hunted a refuge where you had to hand over your license while you hunt the first few days of the season.  They gave a special tag to hold then you bring back any birds and or information on misses and cripples. Then you get your license back. There were conservation officers and biologists at the location and never had a problem.

Here you go, straight from their compendium.

Valid August 1 to July 30 annually.

It is very vague.

"Required to carry this number in some form while hunting ".

A computer print out should meet the requirements or digital copy in your phone also. Like I mentioned earlier i always wrote it on my back tag, biologists or conservation officers never said it was wrong.

Of course the safest answer would always come directly from NY DEC in the form of an email.

Good luck this season

Excellent. OK. Thanks.

I did just call the NY number to ask if I should expect to get it in the mail. I was told not to expect to get it printed out on the orange paper and mailed to me. The guy said, "If they did that, great. But if not, you don't need it. Just write it down on a piece of paper or something and that's all you need."

So, that's what I'll do.
