Anyone familiar with the western part of Iowa? I was heading out mid Nov to hunt my buddys place and he just called me to say he got out bid on his lease. I'm still going..somewhere.  I have the tag and I'm not letting it go to waste. Just looking for any advice if you've hunted that area. Thanks

That suck my girl has friends out there .but more central.  How long does it take to draw out of state tags

As stated above, bow tags were taking 4 years but for the last couple of years it's 5 in most cases. Gun tags typically take 2 years last I heard. If you want to hunt Iowa with a bow and don't want to wait 5 years you can apply for a late muzzleloader tag. With that tag you can hunt with muzzy, bow or centerfire pistol and you can get a tag every other year.

I drew 3 South Central Iowa archery deer tags and have applied every year since I started. The first two took me 3 years to draw each. I drew a tag last year and that one took 6 years to draw the same unit, I will do the math for you....12 years total. I am 60 years old now and by the time I draw my next tag I will probably be around 70 years old.

For all the young guys out there that put off these Western hunts my advice is to start applying now even if it is only for building up bonus points for the future. If not by the time you may be able to do a hunt you may not have the points or the physical ability to do so.

Just some advice from a hunter who is graying up a little and starting to feel their age.

When do you normally apply for the tag? I should probably start the process

Application process starts in May. It's open for about a month. You can apply for a zone in the lottery or just buy a preference point.

I'm sitting on 5 points. Was researching a gun hunt but may opt for the archery tag since it such a coveted tag. They allow crossbows?

My shoulder feels good now but I also haven't tried to shoot a compound in a few years.
