i drove past the ramapo river today for a work related delivery. this river is visible from route 287 near franklin lakes new jersey. right where route 17 and route 287 merge. looked like great water once i drove the side roads and got a closer look at the water. i never fished it but want to. anyone ever fish it? i did not see any trout stocking signs. summer time smallmouth? are only certain areas stocked with trout?

thanks,

It's pretty heavily stocked from the 287 & 17 intersection down through Oakland. Unfortunately it heats up in the summer so it's a put and take river. There was some talk about a stream improvement project in Oakland, but I haven't heard anything about that for a while.

The only place on the Ramapo I do good is in the Ramapo reservation. Then again I haven't recently fished other parts of the river extensively.  Years ago I used to do very well along Doty road in Oakland. Since they rerouted the river to create Potash lake they don't stock the Doty road area any more.  I also used to catch fish at the bridge at 202 also in Oakland. Back then there was a bait shop there called Cal's. That was long ago.

They used to stock across from the mason jar heavily. I think they stopped after the PD starting handing out parking tickets.

I spent most of my money on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.

Haven't fished it in years, there were 2 out of the way spots I used to go, I even fished a few times in the summer, got lots of smallies, nothing to big, along with crappie and good size bluegills, it's also loaded with rusty crawfish, In the spring the bottom literally crawls with them!!

Hunt with a Vizsla, cause life's to short to hunt with an ugly dog! :D RIP Tilly monster. (Attila) 2004-2017.

I did a job a few years ago in Glen Rock and there was a park there , stopped in and there were a few guys fishing , only 1 wanted to share info. If I'd had known the Ramapo was that close and easy to get to I would probably not have traveled to the Musky and Peaquest. Nah, it was a ritual.
