Thinking of getting a Supermag for turkey hunting and maybe buckshot. Any opinions? Good/bad whatever. Like the price point, like the matt barrel w/synthetic stock, like that it shoots 3.5's. I checked one out the other day and the synthetic stock seems a bit shorter then some other guns which, for me, fit as well or better than any other gun I've ever shouldered.

I have one. I used to deer hunt with it back in the day when I hunted with buck shot. I personally am not thrilled with it. I didn't think it shot buck shot very well. Maybe I just didn't find the load it liked. I kept it in case I ever do any bird hunting ever again.

Two people I know have them. They are used as buck shot guns.

They love them because of versatility.

I don't like pumps. So I don't use them.

For a dedicated turkey gun the Mossberg 835 out patterns all others hands down. The only concern I have with that matte finish is rust. I have an 870 (not the super mag) in that matte and it rusts if you exhale on it to heavy. gun has been knicknamed the rust bucket by everyone I hunt with. If I carry it afield it is rusting before I return. Now that gun is about 20 yrs old so maybe they corrected that issue. I have a super mag in camo and that is a nice gun, patterns well and is nice handling. I have both the Mossberg and the 835 if you want to shoot them before you decide just let me know.

Thanks mike. I checked out the 835 and it didn't fit me nearly as well as the 870. Supposedly they have straightened out the rusting prob on the new ones. Supposedly...

Remember you don't need 3.5 inch for turkey hunting lol...

I made that mistake.

I bought the 1187 super mag and use it for turkey, deer, and hopefully at some point duck and or goose.

BUT all these years people have used 3 inch and 2 3/4 without an issue.

I think 3.5 inch was a solution looking for a problem.

If you read the ballistics I think it adds more pellets but not more velocity.

a 10ga would perform better than a 3.5 inch 12 ga

All in all I have one 3.5 and the rest 3in mags.

Makes it a little pain for ammo. If you use ll 3in then why buy 3.5 right lol

go with 870 pump 3in mag ... lol

Consider a Mossberg 500 pump action.. I've had and used mine for 40 years and wont even consider buying another 12 g.. Never a problem with it.. Had it re-blued a few years back but that's it.. Best cheap thing I've ever bought.. :cupcoffee:

Makes sense. The 835 is kind of bulky. Its just the pattern is incredible. But There is no reason to doubt the 870. Its a proven shotgun. I happen to be somewhat of a choke junkie so we can get you dialed right in.

I have a super mag and it's been ok, have had several issues with it jamming at different times. Very disappointed with the way Remington is making these guns now with cheaper metal and design. Recently over the past few years I have picked up a couple BPS guns and have liked them a lot better. Might be another choice for you to consider

I have a mossberg 835 and what you hear is true. The patterns are awesome...buckshot and turkey loads. I have not patterned any steel with it yet. I love mine. Can something be done relatively cheap to get the 835 to fit you better?

Either way, good luck on your purchase whatever you decide on

Why kick the crap out of yourself with a 3 1/2" when it has such a tiny benefit?  Let that turkey take one more step.  Or get yourself a deal on a 10 ga, if you are after geese.  If you want to reach out with buckshot, then just go with a slug gun which is thousands of percentages more accurate than buckshot and capable of shooting well over twice the distance with lethality.  I guess what I am trying to say is forget the macho crap and buy a 3" standard shotgun and shoot 2 3/4" or 3" and not worry about the added kick or cost of ammo with the super mag.

will jump in here on the 3" or 3.5" debate. I have 3 shotguns that hold 3.5" never been that impressed always use 3"

I have an 835, *70 supermag and a Winchester SX3.

Nothing comes out of the safe besides the SX3 anymore. Light patterns good and flawless!

I have an 870 for years , it's the AK of shotguns ... Never failed me Turkey Super Full patterns no Problem , I do used slugs so buck shot I can't honestly have an opinion. 3.5 you don't need , the advancements in ammo these days it's just pure punishment .

Good Luck
