Morris Co. Swamp Donkey Down

On 09/21/23 it all came together.

I knew I was in this deer’s bedroom, I just needed, well, first a doe then a steady wind out of the N/NW. I was fortunate to check the NJ Freezer Queen box on Monday the 18th. I had high hopes that the couple days of cooler weather accompanied by the northernly winds would put the big guy on his feet a little earlier than usual.

Thursday, 21st I got saddled up around 5 o’clock with a perfect little breeze hitting me right in the nose. Not 20 mins after getting settled in, I catch movement down in the bottom and can tell it’s a deer. Take a look with binos and it’s a buck! A smaller 8pt that the deer I’m after has been seen with frequently. He starts making his way to me and 2 minutes behind him, steps the Big 9! They both make their way to me and I am eventually presented a 25 yard quartering away shot. I frame up his offside leg in the EZ-V and pull through my release, THWACK! Shot his heart out! He barreled down through the prickers about 20 yards and fell dead in the creek!

I had history with this deer last year and passed him up. Very cool to end the story with a painted red arrow from my Mathews Atlas!

Extremely blessed and thankful for the opportunity to be in God’s creation and for him giving us dominion over these beautiful animals!
