STERLING FOREST STATE PARK HUNTING.

Recommended Posts

Hunters in North,NJ- Don't forget  to get your Sterling Forest State Park/NY Hunting Permit for 2023/24.

Still no September  Hunting- but October is fast approaching! Plenty of Big ol Black Bears. Come thin them out! Plenty  of Coyotes running around as well. Plenty of Deer-- but No Wild Turkeys- forget about that picture on the Hunting Guide cover- lol. Some Pheasants  are released- but the Bulk of them goes to Stewart State forest as there are many Fields located there.

Sterling Forest is my favorite area to Hike. The only time,I carry because of the number of Black Bears Ambling around the Forest.

Up until recently, Sterling Forest had a little-known secret. And that is a healthy black bear population that was always open to firearm and bow hunting. Whereas New Jersey has placed the bear hunt into the political spectrum. I hunted in there for years and saw that there was great bear hunting opportunity especially for the bow hunter.

That whole NY/NJ Border from Sussex  to Passaic  to Bergen Counties has Big ol Black Bears Crossing back and forth all the time.

Oh yea! Especially behind the JW World Headquaters  and also just north of Monksville on the NYS side. A lot of woods in there and far enough off the main road. Problem with Sterling Forest has always been the NYC hunters during the firearm season. If your rifle hunting, be sure to access from the NYS side. Possession of a deer rifle in the New Jersey woods is a no-no.

Decades back,I took a Hike on a number of unnamed Woods Roads back of the Blue Lake in Sterling Forest and ended up at a old House in a big clearing with a Donkey Tied up . I must have been close to Monksville Res.

All of a sudden the clearing was there.  Alot of Game sign back in there.

fred back in the 50's that was known as the parr farm. a bunch of hunters from pinecliff lake would hunt it including my brother and i. in later years the state logged it and on saturdays they let people cut the tree tops, that was the carter years. i would take my gsp's back there for grouse and woodcock until a black bear up on a side hill had a stair down with the dogs me and the wife. jungle habit was across the gwl turnpike along with a&w root beer stand. my brother shot a deer along the gwl turnpike up in the woods, when he started to gut the deer it jumped up and ran off with his ll bean knife.

Well, I have a funny story about Sterling Forest. A little back story first- Currently it is owned by the States of NY and NJ and has been turned into a State Park. And before that it was owned by City Investing Company and they allowed hunting by permit. Someone else owned it before that and hunting and trespassing were off limits and the area was patrolled by rangers. Well anyway, I worked with an old guy years ago who told of his illegal trespassing's and deer poaching on that tract. So anyway, the story goes like this- "One day he was out poaching deer and he sees the ranger running towards him. So, he starts running deeper into the woods to get away from him. Now there are two guys running through the woods. Now the guy I know is in the lead and he comes onto another poacher who he didn't know. That poacher starts running ahead of them deeper into the wood because he thinks the first poacher is chasing him. So now there are three guys running through the woods!" The guy telling me this story could not stop laughing the whole time while telling me this.
