Anyone ever use a rolling block rifle to deer hunt?

For some reason, I have the itch to hunt deer in NY or PA one year with an old rolling block rifle using rifle sights and no optics.  Old school, I guess.  Wondering if others have done this from the site and what weapon you used?  I have no clue on costs for used rifles, but would guess they depend a lot on condition and rarity.  Not looking to break the bank if I buy one, but I am just now beginning to explore this idea so I have no set thoughts on brand or caliber yet.

Not a true rolling block, but I've seen a few guys hunting the Adirondacks with Ruger No. 1 in 45-70.

Very cool to see, and they were dressed in the old Maine boots, wool loden pants and red plaid wool coats. I swore I was dropped back in time.

That is another good option I hadn't thought of, the Ruger # 1.  I've been searching for Sharps or similar rolling block rifles both new and used and they are pricey which is no surprise.  I know a gun store in Vermont off route 100 near the intersection of route 4 that used to sell lots of older guns, but they are no longer in business.

I've hunted with an h&r buffalo classic in 45-70 in a couple states. Also had a rem 7600 with lyman reciever sight and a 17a globe front sight. I always enjoyed hunting with old school open sights.

Bucksnbows that gun shop in vermont was unreal. I never seen such a collection of old winchesters. Do you remember the name?

I spent most of my money on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.

No, but my wife's uncle and cousin who live in Montpelier, VT bought tons of guns from him and they are both into antique firearms that they shoot competitively.  I can ask one of them.  I understand the owner either died or retired a few years ago.  Last time I was there 2 years ago in August and it was closed by then.

First SMITTY PM SENT! Second while the Ruger #1 is not a rolling block it is a FALLING BLOCK of some damn French name beginning with an F appropriately enough but it is a way cool gun and I only owned 1 once and it was in fact a 45/70 Gov. But I only owned it because I was a wise guy at an RMEF dinner and I was bidding a guy up for the charity and pressed the situation and wound up owning it for $600 I put it on consignment and got my money back in 4 months but wish I had that gun now.

I have a #1 in 22/250 --  you are welcome to take it for a ride if you like

This gun was the best deal I ever got on a gun purchase -- Bought 20 plus years ago from a guy who needed money bad -- $200 new in box never fired

I only fired it for the 1st time early this year -- working up a varmint load at the range

Bucksnbows Down Under...

A friend of mine bought a replica of the gun from the movie, both for hunting and nostalgia. He used it on one hunt and never used it again. The barrel is an unwieldy 34", and the gun weighs almost 14 lbs., plus, its not cheap.

I would hate to carry that thing around all day.
