Great job everyone. Anyone know the final count yet

No, but they will be keeping the season open a few extra days next week for the first time, so today is not the final count this year.  Goal is (I think) 700 and we're still well short of that.  I think they will achieve their goals starting next fall with the addition of the 6 day archery season and 3 day muzzle loader seasons in October plus the normal 6 Day gun season plus extended permit (deer permit, that is) season after 6 Day.

Brian, where are you getting this information from?

Until all bears have been checked, (even those called in after hours) I can't see how that decision would have already been made.

According to the CBBMP and the harvest chart posted by NJDFW, the season can be extended if the percentage of tagged bears harvested is under 20%. There were 133 tagged bears available for harvest and 23 of them had been harvested, putting us at 17.3%  as of Friday.

So Saturdays harvest only needed 4 more tagged bears to surpass 20%. I have to imagine Saturday saw a pretty good harvest and probably a minimum of the 4 tagged bears making an extension unnecessary.

Let's wait for an official release from NJDFW.

“I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear

I tried to keep up with everyone who harvested a bear and congratulate each one of you.  I hope I did not miss anyone.

Congratulations everyone
