At the end of my rope....

Listen, for those that know me and if you read any threads I've written on this site of the other one, you know that 90% of them are about my kids and our times out in the field.  I try not to join in any bitching about what sucks and what doesn't but I've pretty much hit the end of my rope and if it wasn't for getting the kids in the field, I would probably be done for the season.

Long story short, last year we had someone sprinkle animal be gone by the double stand I set up for my father and kids.  Further away I hd set up a Doghouse blind that was relatively well hidden that had gotten knocked down.  We caught the guy and he was ticketed for the stand because of the camera.  We repaired the blind and it was left alone until August when someone started slashing it to point where repairs couldn't help.  The area is Wildcat Ridge...btw.

Fast forward to today....my buddy went up to the area where the blind was destroyed and reminants still lay and not a few yards away, there sits a tree stand.  I thought I could never be so angry and fed up as I was when this crap first happened and now the guy has balls to set up his stand right there.  I can think of a million things I want to do to that stand and that area but  that's not usually who I am.

I'm not the person to ask for assistance but come winter bow or next season, if anyone in northern NJ has anywhere I can set up a pop up for just the kid to use, let me know in a PM.  I'm not one to do this..."I can't find a place to hunt, please give me your spot type request" but if someone can point me in the direction of a spot I can leave a ground blind next year, let me know.  I will even give you blinds to keep for yourself ...lol...I'm losing it.

Apologize for the rant, but I've had it.

This is the type of set up that we have been hunting from for quite a few years now.  We are just as successful as we were when using stands and blinds.  The best part is, there is nothing here that would indicate that anyone was hunting here.

This is public land and we have had several spots ruined by other hunters until we started hunting this way.

Yeah I started sitting on the ground this year to but I still love the view from up top and I'm SURE there is no replacement for covering up the furtive frustrating figetings (Take THAT Haskel Hunter) of one or more very young hunters but seting up inside of a blowdown and adding some camo burlap when you get there can be very effective.

Buckfever1974 before you eat your hart out along with your stomach lining are you SURE the person who set that stand this the A hole from your negitive encounter?

You know others could be attracted to that same spot for the same reasons you and the other guy were like maybe deer using it.

Don't let this get to you and effect your kids and the FUN you have with them go out Sunday and see if Storm Sandy made a gift for you and the kids.

Some people suck don't they?

I would offer up some spots, but everywhere I hunt is public land where the same exact things happen.

However, I can offer you an idea I've been sitting on for a while.

It's basically a "ground blind screen".

I know full well that taking little kids hunting almost requires a pop-up blind. Comfort, concealment, warmth, etc...nothing beats a pop-up blind for kids. Of course we also know that taking a pop-up blind in and out is going to alert deer because they are large and out of place. Turkeys don't care, but deer do.

So my idea is to build a "screen" using chicken wire or rope.in the spots you want to use the blind. Use existing saplings and trees for the "stakes" or bring in something like fence stakes if you have to.

Make it tall enough that it would completely conceal your blind. Also curve it enough so it wraps around to hide the blind from most angles. Shape it like a U or a V.

Use cheap burlap or mesh blind material in addition to native vegetation (leaves, branches, brush, etc)  to attach and weave or ziptie into the chicken wire or the rope.

Make at least one hole or more that will line up with the shooting window(s) on the blind. Done.

You could hang something like a black t-shirt where the window hole is so that it doesn't look any different once the blind is behind it, but probably not necessary.

Now this allows you to bring your expensive blind in and out each time you hunt....(because they are easy enough to setup and take down)

As long as you have a general idea of where the deer are coming from, you can set the screen up so it blocks their view of where the blind is. That way they don't notice this new giant blind each time you hunt.

Can someone steal or destroy the "blind screen"? Of course....but it's cheap enough and probably uninteresting enough that most "gas vents"  aren't going to notice, care or bother.

I think of it basically as making a  blind for your blind. Sure a natural blind would work like this, but it will never really conceal a fidgeting child the way a pop up can and it certainly can't be heated like a pop-up.

Think about it and if my post wasn't clear, I'd be happy to try and draw up a diagram or clear up what I mean.

Good luck. -Matt

“I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target, but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature’s way of fang and claw and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow.” – Fred Bear
