I made my Ny trip to my brothers place near Cannonsville Reservoir. I bow hunted the last 6 days of bow
season, Sun to Friday morning, then did a 280 mile round trip for my youngest sons' birthday. I made it
back Fri night around midnight for the Sat rifle opener. I didn't seal the deal with the bow. I saw deer every sit but one. 3 were under the APR for my zone and 1 wasn't much better. Also saw a few bear, 2 fischer sightings, 2 grey fox sightings and drilled a few porcupines.
Sat morning I set up a trio of scent wicks out according to the wind about 60 yards out. They brought in a 4, 2 different does and a 6. 10:00 I spotted a flash of movement while glassing and saw a dear at the very farthest I can see through the woods. It was just enough to see its head and nose were up in the air with enough headgear to make me grab my gun. Cat and mouse now. It disappeared and I would catch sight of it again in a few different spots over the next 15-20 minutes or so. Eventually he popped up 100 yards out off to my left, not to far from where I first got sight of him. I moved my 3 arm gear hanger so the last arm was in front of me and used it as a rest. I found him in the scope and waited an agonizing lol 2 or 3 more minutes before he stepped and stopped in a spot where I could send him a text message through some narrow openings. It was on the mark and dropped him on the spot.
So why didn't he come in and only hang out in the distance? Well we will never know for sure. The wind was good, he wasn't picking me up, but... He did have an arrow wound that was recent. Maybe he wasn't in shape for a fight ?
I lost my scale while moving and wasn't able to weigh him. I don't shoot drinkers up there. I get one every 3 or 4 years or so, all dressed over 140 and one at 175. For size comparison, he's on my brothers 500 quad.

Congrats on a nice buck! Cool story too. Why do you shoot the porcupines?

Absolute pest. They ate up my brothers brake lines once, a valve stem on a tire and the rubber around his Anderson Windows before they were installed in the cabin.
