I know guys making over $200k with OT, my last few years I averaged $125k and didn't kill the OT, plus they pay into social security and receive health insurance upon retirement at a reduced rate...think long term not short term, plus there are people in need of jobs rather see them working  and paying into the system like we all have then to have the system pay them to sit on their rear ends.

Oh I agree its a trap in many ways.

Don’t do it. Go learn a trade and be happy. Give yourself the ability to leave a company that you hate and go to somewhere that values you. Give your self the ability to take your knowledge and skills and get out of this state. I’m 13 years into a career as a firefighter and regret it daily. I’m stuck here working for an admin that sucks or I have to go start a new career and never be able to retire till I’m 75 because I can’t take my pension yet. The pension sucks and it’s a trap. You don’t get to retire after 25 years you have to go find a new job to afford to live. Pinning yourself into a pension makes you a slave to it. Get a job that contributes to a good 401k and then make contributions to an IRA.

Also spending 1/3 your life locked in with those people will destroy you and your family. Happens to a ton of guys

Perhaps one day you will save somebody’s life, and then you may feel that it was all for a reason. You may have already, thank you.

I am very surprised you are unhappy. Nearly all fireman I know love it. I was joking about NJSP and any other public servant career. There are some negatives and it certainly isn't for everyone.... working night shifts, holidays, & weekends sucks. You have to know how to handle stress. However, economy proof and few careers today offer a pension & health care like a public servant.

As Nomad said, one day you may save a life, etc. and will find what you're looking for.

You could quit, as your are vested in the pension and take a chance to work a job you would like better. Grass isn't usually greener on other side and people only miss things when they're gone. The wait for your job is a line down the sidewalk that is longer than you know.

I do enjoy what I do. I do enjoy when I get to make an impact on people’s lives. But the hours are tough on a family, the pay isn’t as good as it seems and the department I work for is run by paper pushers who long forgot what the job is about. I’d love nothing more than to continue doing what I’m doing but for a Chief and command staff that isn’t so out of touch and cares about what matters most. But I can’t just leave and transfer to a new department without starting over at the bottom of the  pay scale which at this point in my life. I don’t hate the job so much as I hate not having any ability to take my skills and resume and go find comparable pay in another state for a department that lets the firemen do their job. All public safety jobs are the same in this state.

and you’re incorrect about the line of people waiting for my job. 10 years ago you would have been right.  Now we struggle to find half decent candidates. And that’s pretty much universal across the country for fire and police jobs

You are doing something wrong then if you are in PFRS
