Youth day morning...No shots but great time!

No shots, but quick story.....First off, congrats to all the youths who were able to get out today. It was 28 degrees and chilly for the kids! You were 100% correct BowhunterNJ when you said it would be nippy last night lol! I got up with my little guy staring at me saying "Let's go Dad...." at 5 am. (Time to get a new alarm clock) Geared up and got out, no deer kicked up on way in and we got into the stand.....As soon as the sun was breaking @610 we hear movement about 60 yards away. The brighter it got out, the darker the clump got and the bigger my son's eyes got. It was a bear sleeping on its side and was stretching to wake up, never knew we were there. It got up and fed for an hour near us before eventually walking off. While we were on stand we heard sounds that I have been familiar with for a long time. The grizzly bears from Space Farms...My son asked what is that and I calmly told him at first that they were the grizzly bears from a few miles away. I told him I wasn't lying, but that they were from the bear enclosure several miles away at Space Farms! He smiled from ear to ear. Anyway, we saw one doe crossing a cornfield @150 yards away later, and that was it. We got off stand @10 am and headed to Jumboland for breakfast. My son's hand warmers, facemask, and boot blankets were all key ingredients in him staying comfortable on stand with the colder temps this morning. (No afternoon sit because of a pre arranged birthday party). After we left the woods I asked my son if he had fun.....He said he had an awesome time and the best part of the season was "being so close to the sleeping bear!"

To me, that was a successful youth day. Best of luck to all getting out this weekend, hope everyone has fun!

** Sorry for the sideways pics, not able to turn them on my end for some reason.

It's the experiences, not the kill that makes for a successful hunt. So great to see that others see it that way too. Sounds like you both had a great morning !!!
