Petroleum based oils are not good if your gun is used under very cold conditions. If you use it, wipe almost all of it away. But it's the oil you can't get to that causes the problems. It gums up. Use a "dry lube" or other synthetic type lubricants.

I'm running low on Gunzilla. My local mom-n-pop don't seem to carry it anymore, and it's ridiculously expensive on Amazon. So...

What is everyone's favorite:

  1. Cleaning solvent
  2. Lubricating oil

Thats what I use. Works well without toxic fumes.
However don't use it for long term storage lubricant. With time it will actually thicken and become gummy. I use ram oil for lube after I clean

WD-40 is a silicone lubricant.

There are several products under the "WD40" name. They make dry lube, silicone lube, and the original WD40. I'm talking about the original one.  The others are called "Specialist" also.  The original is on far right. Also, others not in the picture.

I used to use Hoppe's, my wife made me use it outside (it's 55% kerosene)….

You’re not alone. I’ve never cleaned or oiled my guns in the house. I clean them outdoors or occasionally in the garage.

I use Rem products for the shotgun and either Hoppe's or Ballistol for my rifle or handguns. Also I picked up some lucas gun oil on clearance and use that mostly on the exterior of my guns as a wipe down oil.

Not trusting the government doesn't make you a conspiracy theorist, it makes you a history buff

Haha. Yeah, years ago, the original WD40 was the only thing people had around. Just like Hoppes #9. But it isn't good for everything. There is better stuff for different uses. You can do more harm than good if you choose the wrong product.

I also have the WD40 "rust preventative" upstairs in my gun cleaning box.

Which is why I moved away from Hoppes :)

I did buy a bottle of Shooters Choice FP-10 a while back, but haven't used it a lot. I used it when I knew I was going out in the really cold weather (wipe on, wipe off), because they claim it remains viscus (or whatever the term is - it doesn't get gummy) in the cold.
