Bunka…

I found this recipe in an old saltwater sportsmen article and thought this looked cool. Painstaking to Tie but I thought it came out pretty good. 7 piece of wire tied first with a combo of saddle hackle and bucktail then tied in one by one as you move up the shank.  A few big jumbo bobs bangers I tied as tube flies as well. Only a matter of time now…

9 wt and 10wts mainly but I did buy a 12 for this year. Overkill but it’s needed to cast some large bunker patterns into the wind.

Go with a two handed rod and you won’t be disappointed. My CND Oceanic is 11’6” for 11/12 weight which is the equivalent of a one handed 10 weight. Casts are typically double the distance than a typical 9 foot for 9 or 10 weight. I toss 36’ shooting heads on a 140’ level floating line. Can cast to my backing with little effort and almost no false casting.

Have you tried any of the kinky style synthetics and the high/low tie techniques? Make great broader bodied patterns quickly and easily. They cast nicely too. These are a couple fresh water patterns using the old Orvis Widows Web

It’s really no different than the appeal to fish in any other manner be it fresh or salt on the ice or open water. Some guys are dry fly purists on streams and you have those on the bay that will do nothing but troll mojos, umbrella rigs, spoons etc. just another way to fish among many but I have come to enjoy it especially in saltwater. Tying flies, testing patterns, casting, using different lines etc all adds to the enjoyment. It’s very active, up close and personal while being able to feel the take. You don’t get that trolling back and forth all day like 90 percent of the guys do. Not knocking it at all as I did it for years and caught plenty of fish. Just not my cup of tea anymore but whatever puts a smile on your face and a bend in the rod is what’s most important to the individual angler.

I know I will catch some slack on this but, never understood the appeal of flyfishing saltwater. I guess I am narrow minded....Just see flyfishing for trout/salmon. I know lots fish for bones, tarpon, etc. Do you prefer flyfishing for bass??

I prefer to fish for 100% of fish I target with a fly rod. And for the last 25+ years, I would say that FF made up 98% of my fishing. Since Covid and wanting to focus on some new species, that has dropped over the past 3 years to only 75%. But as soon as I can figure a way to fish for each species on the fly, I do.
