How does a PA resident buy a firearm in NJ?  I don't have a firearms ID and don't see why I need one. I can legally buy guns in PA, and the gun is leaving New Jersey. To top it off it's a black powder percussion that I can buy in PA without a background check. I just came across it online and it's a great deal. I would like to get it, but it might be too much aggravation.

Technically you'd have to have a NJ FFL ship it to a PA FFL to complete the transaction. However, since it's black powder I don't think need to use an FFL if it is a long gun. Handguns/pistols are another story.

I went to Cabelas and bought a black powder muzzleloader and brought it back to NJ with nothing more the my drivers license.

How does a PA resident buy a firearm in NJ?

Good question.  Call the seller and see what their opinion is.

I was under the impression that all you needed was to fill out a Certificate of Eligibility and both the seller and buyer hold copies of the CoE.

However, if you click on the above link, which opens the CoE from the NJ State Police page, and scroll to #11, it asks for your state of residency and states: "If other than NJ, this transfer must go through a licensed firearms dealer."

Will they ship to your FFL? Or, Is it legal to have a NJ friend buy it then legally transfer it to you without that being considered a straw purchase? The said friend would have the background check blah, blah, blah then legally transport the firearm to PA where as long as they know you well enough to know you're not a felon or nuts, can do the transfer within the letter of the law... just asking anyone who knows the laws if this is legal.

THIS!! I figured there was a Nazi like addition that would make us criminals in NJ even though across the river in America, the transfer is legal..... please, if you voted for a demoncrat today, punch yourselves in the nuts!!

State to state ffl.

In state rules of that state.

Better off buying something local in PA.

In most cases you will get a gun cheaper through tanners in pa than anywhere in the country. The procedure is this though if you are dead set on buying a nj firearm. You buy the gun in nj. Then it gets shipped to the ffl of your choice. Then you pay for the transfer and pick up the gun in your home state. Typically the buyer pays for the transfer. Some nj dealers will work the transfer credit into a better price to offset it. Cost is usually 50.
