Scope of Eligibility: Open to applicants who meet the requirements below.

Description: Under limited supervision of a Supervising Biologist or other supervisory official in the Department of Environmental Protection, assists with MRA field and laboratory work, data processing and record keeping for management, enhancement projects, and outreach and communications tasks.

Specific to the Position: Assist with biological surveys, specimen collection, and stakeholder and outreach events. Appointee will be required to produce general reports, letters, and emails in direct response to questions, requests or concerns from constituents and stakeholders. Design and draft content for materials such as flyers, pamphlets, posters, website, listserv messages, and PowerPoint presentations to be shared with stakeholders. Assist with photo documenting of surveys.

Appointee must have the ability to work independently, often in inclement weather, and to operate various data collection equipment including water samplers, sampling meters, bottom grabs, oyster dredges, and otter trawls.

Position limited to 900 hours per year. This position requires working at the Nacote Creek Research Station on office days, in addition to working outdoors on field days. Office hours are generally 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Monday – Friday). Field days may range from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Monday – Friday) and are dependent on tides and weather.

Preferred Skill Set: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work cooperatively with coworkers as well as the ability to work independently, organize work, and solve problems following prescribed procedures.

Knowledge of vessel and sampling equipment maintenance, basic navigation rules, small vessel operation, and use of computers to collect/compile data. Familiarity with Microsoft Suite is a plus.

College graduate or student working towards a degree in Marine Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, or related field.

Requirements

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act”.

Authorization to Work: Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. Note: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
