Hey guys n gals,

I wanted to start a thread on here for those of us (myself included) who will be making all day sits from now and throughout the rut. What are some things to consider when deciding on making it an all day sit or breaking it up and making it two separate sits and say two different locations....outside of having to get down and use the bathroom LOL

What items do you bring? What makes you stay put even if you have not seen a thing all morning? What are some do's and dont's?

Add anything and everything you have to offer on this so maybe itll help someone out with an item that wasnt in their pack or an idea that could help change the mindset of the hunter on what or what not to do.

Ill add the first item not to forget especially if your not close to home or the truck. Its an obvious one.....TP!!!

It's not even possible for me. 5-6 hrs max. If I do stay I will be so figity that I'd probably make things worse. Better off going for a walk and coming back.

I'm an all day sitter pretty much starting now into January...once the temps really drop, I might do more midmorning on as I find the real early movement is much less.

As far as how to stay on stand all day...

1) Bring plenty of food, you'll get bored and want to start eating

2) Bring plenty of drinks, you'll definitely get thirsty

3) Bring your cell phone and battery backups because you will DEFINITELY drain the hell out of your battery browsing the web, emailing, texting, playing games, etc

4) If you get tired but aren't changing stands, get down and take a quick power nap at the base of your tree.  Even a 15-30 min nap can make a world of difference

5) Keep your attention/anticipation high, I like to call pretty frequently.  Nothing crazy aggressive, just contact grunts, etc to maybe grab an ear of a deer that might be nearby.

6) Remember you can't kill em sitting on the couch, grit it out because at any point, any time, that deer you're after could show up...especially during the rut.

7) Most importantly, hunt somewhere you are CONFIDENT.  If you aren't confident in your spot, you are going to be fidgety as all hell.  If you find yourself in this situation, either find the confidence in that spot or make a move so you have it.  Nothing is more miserable than sitting in a spot ALL DAY where you feel you have little chance at actually succeeding.  Don't be lazy, don't give up, make the move and yeah it'll be a pain in the butt but once you're sitting in that new spot, you'll be rejuvenated with anticipation and excitement to hunt!

Wow. No other comments needed...haha jk! Great response!

I plan on doing an all day sit tomorrow and according to what you wrote I should be good except the phone thing. I have no spare batteries or means to charge my phone. I know they make a case that has extra battery life in it but havnt had the extra coin for it yet.

What kind of phone do you have?

I have TWO battery cases for my iPhone because especially in more remote areas, you'll be eating up battery for signal.

Another good tip is to disable WIFI while in the woods, it'll search and never find anything out there...which takes up battery.

Also put your phone in Airplane Mode when you aren't actively using it to conserve battery...otherwise while it's sitting in your pocket it will be using battery to search for signals when you don't need it to.

For me it's packing plenty to eat, some good reading, and the constant thought that most of the biggest deer I've ever seen have been in the middle of the afternoon.thats motivation enough for me

You can get a universal backup battery for around $16 that should last most of the day. I'll post a link in a few to the site. It's a battery with a USB port so you can charge virtually anything with it. I use them all the time.

Bring a good sandwich into the woods for an all-day. Something to look forward to. I usually bring a thermos with something caffeinated and hot. I've started bringing a wool blanket rolled up under my pack. If it's windy or it gets cloudy, nothing better than a good wool blanket to keep you warm. Breaks up your outline too. I bring the empty Gatorade bottle from my kayak with me, should be self-explanatory. Bring lights and GORP.

Hardest part about sitting out all day is sitting out all day. It can get boring, but I usually watch the critters go about their day to pass the time. Where I sit, I figure it takes about 45 minutes to 90 minutes for the forest to "reset" after I've settled down. Critters start coming back out, and it gets noisy. So don't move too much unless you're going to still hunt through the afternoon to stay warm.

Thanks everyone Im glad I started this thread. Some good info

Thanks for the link Haskell! I didnt realize they had them available that cheap...I guess lack of research on my part.

Bowhunter I have the iphone 5S. Im pretty patient and atleast on shorter sits Im not on my phone too much but I definitely will remember to turn off wifi and place it on airplane mode because then again Im not used to sitting that long so probably will find myself using it more by default.

That link HH provided is nice, that is cheap!  I read the description and wasn't clear if it actually comes with the iPhone lightning adapter cable or just the micro USB.  Make sure you get the right stuff with it.  Maybe HH can confirm since he has one.

10K mah will go a long way, a few days if you're just keeping a charge on one phone. These batteries are great if you live in an area prone to power outages. Keep it plugged in at home all the time ready for an emergency.

Monoprice also sells cables, lifetime warranty. I've had cables die, fills out the web warranty, and they ship new ones out. Cable prices are really good for most any cable you need. Great prices on HDMI cables.

If you're like me and have kids with a ton of crap that needs to be charged with a USB adapter, I strongly recommend one of these. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P936188

Fastest charger around. I have one in my kitchen for all of these batteries and the kids gear.
