Bonus Tag

Recommended Posts

Well I used my bonus tag this morning.  I was drinking coffee at my usual spot when the sun came up and I realized the wind wasn't blowing.  Since we had a nice morning high tide I went plugging along the sod banks.  After beating the water for an hour and trying different spots and lures I had a hook up on a crystal minnow that came loose.  A few cast later he came tight and I boated a nice fat 26" striper.  Since I had a bonus tag I used it.  Shortly thereafter the wind started and I called it a day.

too bad the regs don't allow more than one bonus tag per year.  I don't keep big breeder fish so these little guys are my preferred size.  Better tasting in my opinion.

If I figure out how to post a photo I'll add it later.

Axiom,

NJ has had a bonus tag program since they banned commercial fishing for stripers.  In the past if you bought a $2 bonus tag you could keep a third fish at 28" or over. you could get bonus tags all season with no limit.  This year they modified the program and you are allowed one fish between 24" and 28" as long as you have a tag.  You can see the red tag through the gill.  But once you use it you are done for the year and then have to fish by the normal bag limit of one at 28" to less than 43" and one over 43".
