looking for decent trail cam that wont break my bank. i am in an area where getting it stolen might happen, might not. but i dont want to take that chance on an expensive one. i had a bushnell i bought from walmart years ago but i left batteries in it and acid leaked out causing the trail camera to not turn on. any ideas?

thanks,

robnj is the trailcam maniac on here...definitely is into it and gives great advice.

This is what boomsox24 wrote in another topic recently...I was thinking of checking them out too!

I was looking for a cheap but decent camera. Rob recommended stealth cam p12. And I am no expert but for the price I like this camera. A few friends have wildgame cameras and they don't compare. Better pictures better batteries all around better camera. I have two of them and worth every penny.

Dicks has the Wildgame on sale for $49.99.  I know that they weren't recommended by robnj, but I bought 2 of them last week (when they were 39.99) and am happy enough with them for the price.

I bought 4 of those moultrie trace cameras, put 2 out and kept 2 as back-ups in the event they get stolen.  One of them had some issues after being out for a month.  I just sent it back to moultrie this week to have it replaced under warranty.  They take good pictures and were a good deal at $35 a piece, but I hope to get a little longer than a month out of them.  Hopefully that one is the only one I'll have issues with.  I have a couple moultrie A-5's that have been good cameras for the price.

When in the market for cheap-o trail cams, always check EBay. You can find some great deals ... one time I bought one for under 30 bucks. That has since been stolen, but since it was so cheap, I didn't lose sleep over it.

It was actually beaverman that put me onto EBay for things like this. :happywave:  One time I needed a stupid part for my Ranger - he goes, "try EBay". BAM! There it is. So I go to EBay for cheap trail cams.. BAM! There they are. EBay is a wonderful thing :eyebrow:

A helpful note with the camera with exploded batteries:  If you still have it, clean off the battery contacts with baking soda.  This will clean off most of the corrosion.  Steel wool or a steel brush might get the contacts clean enough to work.

Batteries leak acid, which affects the metal.  Baking soda is a very powerful base, which will neutralize the acid and stop any further reaction as well as removing the acid.  Works like a charm most of the time.

If you don't have steel wool laying around, use one of your wife's/girlfriend's nail files.  I had to do that for a disc reader and it works perfectly now.
