Went down to Virgina 2 week-ends ago and stayed 4 days, came back and worked 2 days, turned around and went back down this past Friday. I had 2 good bucks that I was on, but they kept eluding me. When I was at one blind, I would catch them on the camera at the other, but I kept hearing them sparring in the woods behind the field I was set up on. I was supposed to come home yesterday morning, but High Guy (my boss at work) told me to stay a few more days cause he REALLY wanted me to get one of the bucks I was after. I finally made the move into the woods, found a rub line and set up in a climber where the acorns were falling like rain. It worked. After chasing 4 does over the ridge, I though it was over, but 3 of them cam back an hour later and he wasn't far behind. I took a 15 yard broadside shot and he went down about 60 yards away. I know that I should have gotten into the woods and into my climber earlier on, but the does were ravaging the clover in the field and on my 2nd afternoon sit I had one of the boys run past my blind chasing a smaller buck away. On another afternoon sit, when I came out, there was the biggest one walking the field edge 40 yards to my left. I found it difficult to leave the spots I had seen them in and the spots my cameras were getting pictures, but making the move sealed the deal and it only took one extra sit !!! My biggest buck to date, green scored 134 4/8 and netted a solid 132.

I had borrowed a crossbow due to a fall at the end of August which fractured my elbow.  Bought new broadheads this year and went with the Dead Ringer Rampage Stiletto 2 Blade, 1.5" Hybrids.  I also borrowed a Scent Crusher Gear Bag which, instead of masking odors as Scent Spray does, it eliminates all odors from your clothing.  And, I purchased Ever Calm while down there to give the area around my blind the scent of a deer bedding area.

This hunt challenged my 10 years of learning about deer and their habits and I am grateful for having been mentored by some of the best people around.

Can you post links to the awesome products you used? :)

Pictures aren't enough? Somebody being a smart a.. Oh, I probably shouldn't swear, lol

I had never even heard of the Ever Calm before going down there, but someone mentioned it on FB, so on a trip to Dicks Sporting Goods to buy a Ole Jack Buck Decoy, I picked some up and I really like it.  Smells like the deer bedding areas and you rub it on the trees around you.  And speaking of the Ole Jack Buck Decoy, I wasn't using him the afternoon I shot the buck, but when I had him in the field, I had does all around, not bothered by him at all.  I even had a small spotted fawn walk up to him and touch him with her nose.

I've never had an issue with scents and NJ deer. I think zone 3 deer would be worried if they didn't see humans. When I'm in the blind I've had squirrels, turkey and deer walk right up. Had a chipmunk run under the blind this year. Had to move my foot to shoo it out.

But I am becoming more interested in palawmans scents. I just need to figure out exactly how I'm going to use them.

Sapere aude.

Audeamus.

When you cannot measure, your knowledge is meager and unsatisfactory.

For the most part, I haven't either, but I was hunting a 300 acre piece in VA that had NEVER been hunted and weren't used to people or our scent.
