Recommended Posts

Paying attention to detail and being alert and observant as always, I spotted what appeared to be a Penn spinning reel laying on the shoulder of the road….I said no way could it still be functional…but maybe I cud get some parts off it….welp…sure enough….she is a gem!!  Lol. A lil scratched up but fully functional!  And just maybe it is graced with the kind of luck we all wish for out on the water!!!

My first saltwater outfit was a Penn 650 and a Browning fiberglass surf rod.  Still have both.  Metzler's in Garfield.  My dad bought the 750 Penn and a foot longer surf rod, both of which I still have.  I also later purchased a 6500 which is the same as the 650 before it.

Bought a couple of guns from Metzlers back in late 80s. Always had a nice selection .

Nice find bonefreak

Those reels where know for the bail spring to go bad and close on you during the casting process. Breaking off your rig

Mine is approximately 43-45 years old and caught more fish than I could begin to imagine and zero issues.

Good on you. I got a couple in the garage a 550 and 650 long before braid I use to use them I would swim out to the bar and plug with 17# Andy pink. Then Shimano come out with the Saragossa which put the Penn into retirement.but every season I would have to replace the bail spring. And felt and nylon washers. Now I use van staal and don't worry about old school reel issues.
